Paint prep for new panels

What needs to be done to new Goodmark or AMD panels? Do you take all their black paint off?

Can you trust those Chinamen paint?

After installing new quarters,fenders, inner fenders and other odds and ends. What kind of prep do these parts need? Should you remove all there paint or do you just sand and seal? I know this question has probably been asked before, but I'm new here. Thanks for your help, Bruno

I believe the black you are referring to isn't exactly paint but is actually for corrosion protection.

the black stuff is an EDP (electronic deposit plating) i believe...   needs to be sanded for paint adhesion...   I know it is a rust protection coating

On the quarters, Id scuff it, then use 2k urethane primer, then guide coat and blocksand, to see if they are any dimples/waves. If need be they may need to be skimmed with filler or shot with some polyester primer and blocked again to be perfectly straight. I highly doubt they'll be ready for paint, right out the box. Id skip the epoxy...thats only needed on bare metal, and that edp coating serves the same purpose.

A big YEP on this method instead of just putting hi-build on it.  Epoxy is the best base coat for all primers.

you always want to spray catalyzed epoxy primer over the black electrocoat before you use high build primer.   primer is not designed to go over bare metal and if you are welding bondoing etc you will have bare metal areas on quarters etc.  I use 320 on my d.a. for flat surfaces and the red scotchbrite where you can't use d.a. to sand black electrocoat.  The electrocoat is not always black either .I have seen green-grey-a poop yellowish color too. depends on what company made part.

I believe that on these aftermarket parts we get for resto work nowadays that the e-coat should be removed atleast from the outside of the panel .  Its not a rush job its a resto,and IMO its not worth taking any chances.

I started sanding on my new quarters and I found that I actually had some surface rust under the black coating although it was not apparent while looking at the panel as it was very light. The car had the quarters put on about 5 years ago and sat in storage in a garage but showed no sign of any rust under the coating. Had I not started to sand the panel to perform some bodywork, I would not have known and then primed the car. This would have sucked when the new paint job started to bubble through a year or two later. Just something to keep in mind. After seeing this I will always remove the coating and start fresh as it comes off quickly anyway.

I agree . the repop parts are not cleaned as well or go through the same metal treatment process before electrocoat  such as a factory honda or other factory oem replacement panels. I always strip it off the aftermarket parts . but if someone is not going to do that then the next best thing is to do what I said for prep.
