2 Field Alternator on a 68?

I am having the same problem as hemi68charger. I have a 1968 D200 Pickup I purchased to use as a parts getter for my Chargers. The previous owner replaced the alternator and regulator at O'Reilly Auto Parts. The alternator is a roundback but has 2 field connections. With the field from the regulator connected to the field on the alternator I get no charge. Once I ground the other field connection on the alternator, it starts charging. Is this OK to continue or do I need to replace the alternator with a single field type? I don't want to fry anything. Thanks, Dick :shruggy:

should work just fine with one field grounded...    the old "single field" actually had two fields but they grounded one with a bolt to the alt case...

Thanks Thunder. I just don't want to mess this truck up. It only has 66K on it.
