A speedshop rebuild a tranny  of a friend of mine and it's started to strange after 500miles.. he had to go to Pakistan (he's a soldier) and we took his car and got out the tranny and brought it to the speedshop course that's what he asked us to do... and so we did..

they told him the (brand new )TCI stall converter went wrong and the metal from that came in the tranny and needs a total rebuild (AGAIN!)... he started emailing with the speedshop if this was warranty or not and they sended him a few pictures...

this are the pictures... have you guys ever seen this before, and do you have a clue of what happend here?????

chips.. posted in wrong section.. could any mod move it?  ::)

Don't know what's up with the outside of the converter - but that would not send metal into the tranny by itself.   I can't think of how it would get chewed up like that unless one of the front pump bolts worked it's way out - even then, that location is suspect.

What worries me is the snout - sure looks like someone ground out the slot wider and that would cause problems.

I wonder what the pump looks like. Was there aluminum fragments found in the pan? That could be from the stator inside the torque converter.
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....

The converter has moved far enough back to contact the iron pump housing, this could be caused by loose converter/flexplate bolts, a balooned converter or a wiped out crankshaft thrust bearing.

If the converter moves far enough it can wipe out the thrust washer(s) inside the converter and send debris into the trans itself.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

when we took the tranny of the converter/flexplate bolts where not loose... converter was brand new (TCI).. so this could mean this would be a manufacture error?

how can we check if the crankshaft thrust bearing wiped out?

What you need to do is get a dial indicator and put it the end of the crank and then force the crank toward the front and rear of the block. Works best if you have the oil pan off you can get a big screwdriver in there to move it. Somewhere in your shop manual there will be a specification for the end play. Generally it is between .002"-.007" but double check for your engine.

If the crank end play checks OK, it could be a simple case of a mismatched converter/pump, some pumps require machine work when used with certain converters. This wouldn't explain the metal inside the trans, there could be two separate problems. Can you post a pic of the debris in the pan?

Below shows the machining of the pump cover.
