I'm getting ready to start my 383 on a startup stand and was wondering about the torque converter. I have a 727 that is completely gutted to mount my engine to the stand. Does the torque converter (an old one) have to be filled with fluid to balance anything or do you think it would be ok. This is a steel crank internally balanced. Thanks Guys maybe a stupid question,just want to do it right.

This doesn't answer your question but have you considered using a bell housing and flywheel rather than the auto trans set up? Thats how I do mine and its less hassle.  :Twocents:

Yes, I did consider this but I don't have a bellhousing and flywheel. Can't justify the cost to buy one just for startup...these things are high dollar. Even tried to borrow one but no help there.

My thought is, if the transmission is completely gutted what is the back of the convertor going to ride on?

................U r right, he will need 2 have a complete trans, they dont call it a flex plate 4 no reason....it wont take long ans it will b vibrating and shacking like crazy.....kim.....

Call me stupid but any start up stands I have seen did not even have a transmission hooked to them. Mind you these have all been custom built.

If the engine is internally balanced then a transmission should not be required??

I am not being critical just curious that is all.

There is a "start up" video on youtube with some guys just holding it down on a table.  Without the torque convertor or flywheel you would have a way to spin the engine to start.

Thanks, I forgot about that!! I guess you do need to start it!!
