got a quote for my bumpers today

i called this place down here in canada ( dont wanna mention it yet) for a quote on rechromeing my bumpers and they called me back today .i need some tips if there's any where u canadian guys would reccomend i should go. they quoted me $1350 for the bumpers and 15 bucks a foot to repolish my trim  :o

One thing I learned from my dad while restoring his friend's '70 GSX...getting stuff chromed is really expensive! I wonder how much a company here in BC will charge to do my front bumper for my Duster.

I would think it was cheaper in Canada? ....especially without the strict EPA requirements (that has killed most of the small shops) here in the US  :scratchchin: In fact, My Dad got his 'Cuda bumpers done by "The Plating House" somewhere in Ontario because of the cost and quality is much better than here in Michigan.  This shop was used exclusively by Legendary Motorcars.

when we had them done on the 72 we sent them to bumper boyz in ca. they are still look like new. they were done about 8 years ago.

Three years ago...the shop my Dad went to was definately called "The Plating House" in Concord, Ontario.  It passed his tough inspection.... and he's very fussy about wavy chrome.  Hell, if anyone thought I was fussy, ....I'm a "lay-down" compared to this old cat. :D

Hey there Charger R/T ................Cambridge Custom Chrome has always been expensive, but has been VERY good quality........they do really nice chrome work....better then some places in TO........I live close to Cambridge and 4 years ago they did the bumpers on my 71 442 Convertible.....they were like show pieces but cost me then about a $1000 a pair.......
I have had chrome done at other places on the step plates on a little red express and they peeled within two years.......
I give Cambridge  :2thumbs:up for quality....but pricey

That seems extremely expensive!

I used to work in a body shop and we sent out semi bumpers to a place called Kelowna Electroplating. It cost 300 per bumper but that may have been a good deal as we did a lot of business with them. Here is their website.

We just had our chally bumpers redone at Tri-City Plating.  Lifetime warranty for as long as you own your car. 

I can say that we have used Bumper Boys also and can not say enough bad things about them.   :RantExplode: :brickwall: :flame: :icon_smile_angry:Run away as fast as you can from the BUMPER BOYZ!!!!!!  I REPEAT..... RUN, don't walk... RUN AWAY!

i have to say they are holding up very well. but my dad was parking the car in the new garage for his first time himself he hit it and it scratches easy.

Don't know about the bumpers exactly but the $15 per foot for polishing sounds about right (here any way).

Don't kid yourselves.  Even though we don't have an EPA and there is a long standing myth that we are like Mexico with snow, Canada is in many ways a socialist country and there are a PILE of stringent environmental regulations here as well.  Some mirror the US, some are indeed more lax but there are some that are worse.  I can't speak on chroming specifically but in general it isn't much easier here than there.
As for Legendary, even though I'm not sure if they used them there used to be a shop in the Toronto area that was popular but the owner was killed not too many years ago and I'm not sure where the restorers there go now.  Maxwell, Shakey?  Cambridge?

There was a guy from Montreal Quebec at Moparfest last year that had some nice stuff and his prices seemed decent.  I can't seem to recall his name at the moment though?  :think:

I would recommend keeping your original bumpers instead of buying a repop. Also make sure the guy you use will rechrome and give you back your bumpers. Sometimes they swap them if they have them in stock.

The polishing does sound like a decent deal, that is equivalent to them doing a check moulding for $15.

That was in Brampton. The man did excellenting chroming and Stainless polishing. Can't remember his name at the moment but he was found dead I believe in his shop. Cambridge does an outstanding job on show chrome. I got them to do a bumber for me in lousy original factory finish. They resisted because their reputation has always been that they were one of the best at show chrome. I talked them into it - I gave them an NOS front bumber to go by. It was such a pain to duplicate the factory finish it actually cost more than their best show chrome. It turned out nice.
Don't put re-pops on a show car.
Is that 1350.00 for the pair? If it is that is an average price for GOOD work.

About 5 years ago, I shipped my bumpers from CA to North Star Plating in MN because of their reputation  (see article below, like several that I read at the time).   The work is THAT GOOD to justify shipping both the bumpers and bumper guards.  Their shop does bumpers and only bumpers and you get your bumpers back (I marked mine).

As best I recall, it was like $350 for each bumper and $100/pair for the guards.  The bumpers are show condition and still look mint years later.  Fantastic work.

That price is not horible. With chrome you usually get what you pay for. Alot of work goes into a show bumper. Ex. I had my rear bumper done to "show" quality, they also studded it so there are no mounting bolts visible. It was $1000 for one bumper...... but its perfect. I would stay away from repo bumpers. I tryed them. The front bumper is OK. It fits well but is very wavy. The rear bumpers are garbage. I tried 3 of them and they all fit like crap.

My advice is find a shop, look at their work and see what kind of warrenty they offer and bite the bullet.
