I dug up these the playboy ad and a magazine red 69 daytona of Steve Colfield AL.Mule car driver seems to be wearing scat pack orange jacket & hat  :Twocents:

That's the "mule" for testing/mock up wearing the "squid tube" wing supports that were initially intended for race use,.....until Chrysler learned they had to "homogenize" the race cars into production cars

got the wing it daytona mag  some where ,  been discused about on here before from memory  ,  the red daytona with a twin snorkel air cleaner & turn downs !  in the muscle car classics pull out calender one year ! :scratchchin:  did that not have the 15 inch Hemi  finned  ( W11 )wheel covers also
or am i thinking of another :scratchchin:

Not only are the #71's prototype fender "exhausters" shaped like a NACA duct, the highest part isn't anywhere close to being located over the center of the wheel/axle.

Regardless of "what" some claim, I've always held the belief that the fender scoops were to relieve underhood air pressue and heat on the race cars, as they have no inner side fenderwells,....the street version, was just a homogenization of the race stuff to apease NASCAR rules

You're preachin' to the choir with me, Mike.  While I understand the rationale behind the tire clearance explanation at the time (throw everyone off the trail of the 'real' purpose), you'd think the unofficial statute of limitations with NASCAR has expired - thereby relieving the back-in-the-day engineers of the need to toe the corporate P.R. line.  Oh well.
