Has anyone here actually tried to use the Ca yellow & black plates?

I just got off the phone with the Ca DMV (the whole experience was  ), and was told that only cars prior to 1963 can use the old plates. As this information was in her official manual it must be true. I think the lady does not know what of she speaks, so I will go down next week to see in person about getting this done. Have any members here done this and what problems did you encounter? It would be nice to drive to MATS with period correct plates (that Skip68 gave me) on the '68.

I do, sorta.

I had my old 1970's blue & yellow plates repainted in the earlier 1960's black and yellow scheme.   In addition, I have the old red month sticker (they were blue back in the 1960's) and a repro 1969-dated registration sticker.  (the correct & current tag is in the glove box).  No cop has ever done a thing even those that have come over to chat about the car.

As I undertand the law, you can only run the old plates if they're currently active in the DMV system on a registered car.

Correct. But as of July 1 2009 they may be used on period correct cars (as long as the plates are not in the system/being used ).

Get your plates restored now while you have the time and before the prices skyrocket.

Dan, here is what I was going to do and I called DMV about it a few years ago.  You go in and order personalized plates that is the same lic. number as the one I gave you.  They run a check to make sure it is not being used and say ok.  Then when you get the new plates, you just put the old one on.     That's what I was going to do and DMV said I could use that plate number.  I just didn't say I had an old plate I was using.

I'm just going to wait until I actually talk face to face with a DMV bureaucrat before I proceed further. So I'll just run the current personalized plate "4BL 4SPD" on the drive, and maybe put on the black and yellows when i get there.

yep - I got the original black plates  off my road runner...    also have a set of yellow plate off my grandfather's 1958 Nomad...

Anyone successful adding black CA plates yet??

Was planning to go to DMV today to register the old plates.  Glad I didn't because state workers, including DMV, were on furlough today.  Thanks Arnold & Legislature!~

 Today all the Calif. DMVs are closed due to the state being basicly broke, they went from two fridays a month to three,.. anyhow, so Moday they will be open again, but I expect it will be crowded...

Yea, thanks I got the form.  I figured the real challenge will be dealing with the Rocket Scientists employed by the DMV as they deal with this for the 1st time.  

Anyone actually run that gauntlet yet?

I know I'm just an Oregonian talking to Californians but I am going to the DMV next week with some new/old blue plates to have them registered to my '68. However, instead of arguing with someone on a power trip who doesn't know what he/she is talking about I will be going in there armed with a copy of the Oregon Revised Statute which states exactly what I am allowed to do. http://www.leg.state.or.us/03reg/measures/hb2500.dir/hb2573.en.html

Your Calif. plates are much cheaper than ours on the front-end but our $82 fee is a one-time deal. Looks like you guys will have to pay to renew.

Unfortunately, I doubt the geniuses @ the DMV are likely to read or have read the statute.

I'm still quite interested in hearing of any 1st hand experiences.

I went down on the 3oth and they had no problem until the computer wouldnt accept the code year based on the last 3 numbers on th eplte ( mine is YXL, which is correct for 1969), they said it hadnt 'gone into effect' and to return after the 1st and there would be no problem at all. they DID eyeball my plates pretty close tho. I went to the dmv on Fell and Baker in SF.

Well, AFTER you get your plates registered tell them they can have your copy of the law to refer to next time.

BTW, I didn't see it in that Calif. statute I posted but do they limit usage on these vehicles or is that in a different "special interest" category?

 they consider it a 'vanity plate' so theres no limitations other than it has to be the correct year of car.

in essence, I am asking for a vanity plate that says YXL 405

I think you can use 'aftermarket' plates if they are the correct colors and have no more than 6 digits, so you could try to register a plate say ' boner' and then have that plate made etc. but I wanted real ones that where '69 issue so I got the 'Y' plates.

X Y and Z plates where issued in 69, theres a webpage sumwheres explains it all.
