G/V tailpiece driving my nuts!!!!!!

What am I missing here?  I got my new 727 from Cope Racing and am in the process of putting my Gear Vendor unit on it from my old tranny.  Simple enough, right?  I've spent the last 3 hours trying to get the G/V tailpiece mounted to the new tranny!  Although I don't have the proper tool for spreading the retailing ring. I've done it before with what I've got.  The tranny is standing up on the workbench.  When I think it's starting to go on, the tailpiece wants to turn clockwise and won't budge if I keep the bolt holes lined up.  I don't want to force the parking pawl into it's home with too much pressure.  What gear should it be in when putting this together.  Man, I feel stupid.  But, better to just walk away from it before I start throwing things.   :brickwall: :brickwall: Any tricks to simplify this process will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,  Bob

i don't know when you'll be back on here so here is some info in case you bought it from someone else and don't have the directions

you have to take the parking pawl out of the original housing and install it in the gv housing making sure  the spring is in same position AND orientation

you are using the new parking pawl they provided and you have inserted the pivot pin to secure it?? correct??

some of these questions may irritate you but i don't know what your working with

when sliding the gv adaptor over the tailshaft you have to guide the park control rod so it contacts the parking pawl seat in the gv adaptor

according to directions you should be able to rotate the gv adaptor left right and forward and back with no binding

hope some of this helps

Thanks Mauve66! Yes, I've got the directions and the tailpiece is already set up with the pawl, as I had it installed in the old tranny.  I didn't know that the trans needed to be in 1st gear, so that may have been creating a problem for me.  Also, the lock ring seems like it may have a slight twist in it, so I think I'll switch it out for the one in the standard tailpiece that came with the new tranny.  Tomorrow is another day and all will go well.  Bob

OK, it went together pretty easy today.  I didn't have the rod for the parking pawl positioned just right and the retaining ring did have a twist in it.  I used the new ring from the new 727 tailpiece.  Life is good again.  Bob
