I am working on designing some material engineering projects for a couple of grant proposals while on a bit of down time (waiting to teach college courses starting this summer).  I had some chemical ideas that I have been letting stir on the backburner for the past few years and I think that it is a perfect time to put them to use (ie. they involve the areas of energy development/conservation targeted by the recent stimulas package).  One of them might be a starting point for a business venture, as I have one person wanting to do investing in that area aready.  Alot of my spare time is devoted to working on either designing new chemical materials for their properties or trying to solve all types of real-world problems.....

My field of science is very hard to get employed into industry right now, as the previous layoffs in the chemical industries have left little openings for the less experienced guys.  The government is hiring, but alot of others are fighting to get the same job.  A lot of universities/colleges are undergoing hiring freezes right now and want incoming professors to bring in grant money for their research programs.  The problem is that you can be very bright, but amoung a lot of other very bright individuals, you must shine brighter than the rest to get that position.  A Ph.D. does not guarentee a job anymore, you need 3-5+ years of specific experience in the area that the company/agency/college is wanting to expand in.  But, it is a catch-22, as you need the job to get the experience to get you the exact job.  Most Ph.D. chemistry graduates are forced into low-paying, all-hours postdoc positions to start out with, but even those are hard to get anymore (not to mention the compatition from overseas).  I am a bit better off than most recent graduates, as I planned on this type of thing potentially happening when I got out of college and have acted accordingly.....

its actually not that much of a harder compared to the us made trucks and higher end cars, now when you get down to hondas ,kias, hyindai etc its like working tin foil, the main issue with working on older cars is the paint especially original paint cars because as they age the paint loses alot of its elasticity and you run the risk of craking paint, I repaired a 71 hemi challenger with 1800 miles that had hail damage and original paint I was sweating bullets working on it but was paid well to do it.

I saw on CNN today that a school somewhere in us, can't remember, put an ad in the paper for an afternoon janitor at 15 bucks and hour, and the guy got 509 applications.   a ton of them were very qualified skilled trademen, educated, etc. etc.,    the hiring guy said that it wasn't a bad job because you had a decent wage, you knew what hours you were going to work week to week, good benefits, steady work,     just sharing that with ya FYI

Pretty lame job here, I'm a route sales represenative for Hinckley springs bottled water company. Basically a long title for a man who drives a truck and drops off 5 gallon bottles of water and cases of water bottles.

Before that worked as a foreman for Harvey Construction company for 8 years running a crew laying water lines for the city of Indianapolis. Work was pretty fun then, and the pay was great, but the 85-90 hour work weeks put a dent in family time with the wife and boy. So I quit 2 1/2 years ago and took a 40% pay cut to only work 45 hours a week and no weekends.
