I know some of you guys must have done this already but have a bunch of old original VHS tapes I'd like to transfer over to save room. questions are:
1) What is the best/easiest way to do it?
2) Any "secret encryption" to worry about?
3) Legal issues? I own the original VHS tapes and DVD's will also be for my private use...do I destroy the tapes when they're transfered to DVD to "protect" the copyright?

Thanks

Ghoste

I've done a bunch and all I've done is to hook the vcr up to the dvd recorder and let them do their thing.  I don't know how to crack the encryption stuff but Ionly had a few tapes that I couldn't copy, the rest seemed to work.  I didn't destroy them I just put them away for whatever.

The other night on eBay I saw where they now make a RCA to USB adaptor so you can burn to your computer.

Not sure how the quality would compare.

Bill, My old VCR took a crap last Friday. So, Monday, I went out and bought a new $179. VCR/DVD recorder combo from Walmart. It's a Magnavox. It took me a little to figure out how everything works, but I love it. Yesterday, I started transferring my video tapes to dvd's too. Mine has a built in digital converter. So, now I'm getting the digital cable channels that the cable company charges for, for free :yesnod: :D

1) What is the best/easiest way to do it?
Buy a combo VCR/DVD player/recorder and follow the directions. Mine, you find, and pause the video tape where you want to start the transfer, then set the DVD disk to the quality you want it to record (same as a VCR "LP/slp" setting), and click the "dub" button, it will start recording, and then stop the recording when you want it to stop.

2) Any "secret encryption" to worry about?
I haven't found any yet. Not to say you might have some. Nothing you can do about it if you do have some tapes with it.

3) Legal issues? I own the original VHS tapes and DVD's will also be for my private use...do I destroy the tapes when they're transfer ed to DVD to "protect" the copyright?
No. I toss them in the garbage, or give them away. In some cases, I'm replacing the tapes with store copy DVDs as you can get some really cheap if you look around. I today finally bought "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry" Supercharged Addition on DVD to replace my VHS tape. I got it new for $7.00 with shipping off Amazon.com :Twocents:

I have a JVC DR-MV100B vcr/dvd recorder combo. Only dubbed a few tapes so far but haven't run up against the copy protect yet.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I bought a Samsung DVD - VHS recorder, simple instructions. Insert Dvd, insert vhs, push play for vhs, push record or copy and done.
I have the model number for it at home if needed.
