Are you guys aware that there was another person who was on tour with those 3? Can anyone name the other person who was on tour with them, but did not get on the plane and had to take the bus?

Waylon Jennings!

Nope.

It was  Dion DiMucci. Who now does Christian music. Saw him once, when I was younger. Liked his music quite a bit.

Actually, he WAS supposed to be on the plane too!  Waylon had a lot of guilt issues cause of that I heard.

Dion was definitely  part of the tour but was not scheduled to take the charter plane ride that day. Waylon Jennings was also there (he was one of the Buddy Holly bandmembers, the Crickets) and was scheduled to take the charter plane ride but gave up his seat to a sick "Big Bopper" so he could get there faster than the long tourbus ride was going to take. Good decision on Waylon's part! Ritchie Valens also was on the plane because he did not want to go on a long bus trip and won a coin toss with another Buddy Holly bandmember, Tommy Allsup for the seat on the plane.

The plane was actually a small 4-place Beech V-tail bonanza, later known as a hard plane to fly and called "the Doctor Killer" as a nickname as Doctor's who did not get regular flight time but could afford a nice plane.

Fred

Actually it's amazingly sad how many of them died in plane crashes.
Ricky Nelson  / Ronnie VanZant, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines /  Stevie Ray Vaughan  / Jim Croce  / Patsy Cline  / John Denver  /  Aaliyah  /  Otis Redding  /  Randy Rhoads just to name a few.
And they were all so young!

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

From what I remember Ritchie Valens was deathly afraid of flying due to losing some friends from two airplanes colliding over the school and crashing onto his friends, but was talked into getting on the plane.

EDIT: Ok I see that he did win a coin toss. Weird that he would even want to flip for the plane seat.  :shruggy:
