What do you guys think of the brazilian made Charger

Hi guys how you doing? I just want to know out of curiosity what is your opinion on the brazilian Chargers, in here the Chargers are A-Bodies, were assembled in Brazil between 1971 to 1980 and have a lot of things in common with a Dart, the only engine option we got here is the 318 and a 4 speed Clark transmission was standard, and later an automatic kicked as an option, I'll throw in some photos so you can comment on them.

headlights and rear window on the grey one are pretty cool  looking, wish more a bodies looked like that

There is other subtle differences between them, like side stripes and taillights, in here they were marketed as a high performance version of the Dart, they made 17 HP more than the Dart and had 4 speed trans while the Dart only had 3 speed in here, I personally like the second gen (1973-1978) better and I truly dislike the third gen, what's your opinion on them?

The early ones are okay, but I don't like the exaggerated sail panel area that much. I think I like them because I've had several A-Body cars & still have my '71 Scamp.

The last one is just hideous. It looks as though 3 different car companies were building one car together, but never got to see what the other was doing until they assembled it.

I like the 1st and 2nd gens best (some things are universal) but the 3rd one is interesting in its own way.  They're an interesting sidenote in the history of the Charger nameplate thats for sure.  There is virtually nothing known about them up here so anything else you want to post about them, I'll be quite happy to check out. You are going to tell us more about them right?

Yeah, the third gen is a bit "out there" in terms of styling - at least for my tastes, but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to own one.

Isn't the one you named "3rd gen" really a brazilian Miranda o Lebaron ?.. or a Magnum

Hey there, actually this one really is the Charger, but it looks like the Lebaron or Magnum, it's basically a sportier version of the Magnum look at the louvered back window and at the original two tone paint, there's a subtle difference about trim, and the brasilian Lebaron it's basically a 4 dour version of the Magnum, I'll put some photos of them, the first ones are Magnums and the last one the LeBaron, remembering that all 3 were similar to anything else and excells in only one area, confort, they have detuned everything else.

Its really a shame they didn't include stronger engines, the only option on all Dodge cars from here really was a 318 2 BBL making 215 hp in the Charger and 198 hp on the Dart, and that really was until 1978, when everything became the 198 hp version. But that really is no problem today, I know some friends with 340/360 conversions, friends with stroker LAs or Magnum engines, one that went all the way up for a 440 version and uses only for dragracing, and even one that went the new Hemi route with a 5.7 (car still in construction for now), but one thing is for certain, don't matter from where the Mopar fans are all the same, lol and even the ugliest 3rd gen Charger are good tire burners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with you, it really is strange and ugly, but you say that because you didn't saw our version of the Polara, let's just say it is really, really small and have an 1.8L 4 banger.

Of course I will, at the time the entire Dodge line needed a boost in sales so they took styling cues from some american cars of 79 and aproached a more luxury kind of look, the only vehicle that didn't followed the new trend was the Dart (wich starting in 79 looked like your model 73-75 but with a different rear end), another reason for the style change was the sucess that the Ford Landau and Galaxie were having in our country, the public demanded luxury, it was then that the Magnum, Lebaron and the new Charger arrived, and as in earlier slight trim changes were made between them, the Magnum was kind of a high-end luxury coupe and the Lebaron it's 4-door version, and then came the Charger R/T (every Charger in Brazil were R/Ts since it's a sportier version based on other cars rather than beeing a separete one, kinda like the Pontiac LeMans/GTO thing) wich was a little less luxurious and were sold to the "I wanna go fast crowd" (even tough it really wasn't in fact faster, but looked like it was) it was the first Charger that didn't offered leather seats and a vynil roof wich was pretty much standard since then, the new grill/ headlight panel were made of fiberglass and plastic, the rear side window had louvers and it was the first brazilian cars that offered alloy wheels, the two tone paint was standard since the side stripes began being considered tasteless and tacky, and they tried to come up with an inovation, the car went well sales wise, but on the second half of 1979 the entire Dodge line that belonged to Chrysler Do Brasil were sold to Volkswagenwerk, this was the beggining of the end, the Charger came back in 1980 without the twotone paintjob and the rear windows lost the louvers, leaving the difference between they and the Magnums even more subtle, 1980 were also the las year of the Charger even tough VW promissed to mantain the Dodge line, the only Dodge car remaining was the Dart, that didn't last much longer, ending production in 1981.

Hi there the example you posted could be a 1971 or 1972 Charger the rear of it contained tailights from Dart models, but different rear finish panels, along with the longer sailpanel, one curiosity is that in 71 the taillight were from the Dart 69 and in 72 it was from a 68 Dart, actually speaking of Dart your model 69 was our 70 and 71 model and your 68 was our 72 (quite confusing) and from 73 on it looked kinda like you 67 but with slight differences in the grill, tailight on Darts/Chargers received two more version a 73-74 wich were flat, and 75-78 wich were like the ones you saw on the gray one I posted.

They sure are cool, actually I don't own a Charger, I have a 74 brazilian Dart, but with a Charger 318 (17 more hps) and doing a final assembly of a Barry Grant Speed Demon 650 CFM 4 BBL with an Edelbrock performer Intake, an MSD 6AL, billet distributor and a blaster SS coil, wanted to do more and turn into a 69 GTS and put a 408 Stroker engine, but I have to part with it because I'm going next year to college in there in Lima, Ohio, want to attend a High Performance Motorsports course, I am also going to Carlisle All Chrysler on July to search for a college project( I really want a 68 Charger), so if you or someone else interested want we can meet up there and I can bring a lot of pictures of brazilian Mopars, later I wiil post some pictures of mine, it's a little banged up, but I had many fun times on it.

This is the 1974 Charger R/T, and yep this stripe was all original and from the factory, I agrre with you it's the coolest, every Charger had different stripes depending on the year it was made, so there was a different stripe from 1971 to 1978 and then it moved on to a two tone paint on 79, the only year it had nothing was 1980
