We have a 22 inch radiator from a 383 and it checks out fine (the 26 inch radiator is kaput though), would a 22 inch radiator work with a 440?

is it an air car? 440's were put behind alot of 22" radiators but in non air cars.

Ghoste

Depends on what else you've done to it too obviously.

Stock radiators, in either 22- or 26-inch, are pretty notorious for doing an inadequate job of cooling. Having them rebuilt with a modern three- or four-row core usually does the trick though.

It is a non air car, the motor has comp xp cam, and speedpro pistons... its not a real major build, we hope for around 400 horsepower...

I agree. I have one of the 22" 043's hanging in my garage (future restoration material) for my 383. The previous owner said it worked just fine in his 440 build in Florida. It was re-built. Not really hard science but comforting knowledge anyway.

Before 1966,there were no 26" radiators.Everything was either 19" or 22" regardless of body style. If you had a 65 Imperial with air and loaded with accessories you still had a 22" radiator with the 413.If all your components are functioning as they should,a 22" radiator will work fine with your 440.

Yeah but that was in the days of good gas and no global warming to add an extra load to it.   (how much is it now 30 or 40 degrees over the pre-global warming time?  :smilielol:)

Global warming is the cyclical cycle (hmm, redundant?) of the sun warming and cooling, and thus driving the temperatures of our planet up and down. The purest natural process as you can get.  :icon_smile_wink:

22" 053 rads came in a variety of big block 383 and 440 cars as long as you did not get an axle package or a/c.  If you got one of those, they automatically upgraded you to the 26" rad.  440 cars with the 22" rad got a fan shroud where as 383 cars got no shroud and a fixed 7 blade fan.

Agreed. The 053's were an 1969 issue. In '68 the 383 4-speeds used 2898043, a 22" radiator with no shroud. If the 383 4-speed was a 2-bbl you could get A/C, in which case the radiator would be 2898047, a 26" unit with a shroud. Supposedly no 4-bbl's got A/C (but some have popped up anyway). The 440 auto's always got a shroud with the 22" 043 radiator (with no A/C). If A/C then an 047 with a shroud. This is just what I have read.  :scratchchin:
