No one knows, that is why it is such a mystery.  Was it an XP with Hemi badging or a Hemi car with XP badging?  :icon_smile_big:

mauve66

ok, i see the pics your talking a about and the emblem on the roof is too short to say charger so it must be SE but what about the other emblems for the door??? maybe they just put them there, without an engine shot maybe its a 383 car (no i don't know about emblems on 2nd gens just 1st gens so teach me)

the reason i say this is some of the other things they have done for pics like the tape on a superbird nose for the headlight buckets or the floor jacks to hold up the 1st gen early pre production car for pics due to no suspension on it at the time?? not arguing just thinking ............

just supposing ..that it was the very first charger built ,  i heard these pilot cars were built when the plant was closed in the summer ...... by managers & supervisors etc ...to work out any bugs , fitting up problems with the new model , well supposing they only built that one car   :yesnod: .. & evaluated it with different engines  , name plates , & turned it into different models ..... & that was the car they eventually crashed , as judging by the black & white & color photos .....they seem to be the same color combo
been looking at this video ..same color combo , even has a three speaker dash .... but no R/T badge  :scratchchin:  but an SE .   :shruggy:   :popcrn:

Has the M25 rocker moldings on that one though.....but if you look close at the dash when they flash by it has the '68 only bulls eye medallion between the clock & speedo....just like this shot from the 69 brochure (chock full of '68 items)

WHat's the status on the car today? Was it scrapped or is it still out there?
Hmmmm :scratchchin:

Would not be surprised if there is no "hemi" emblem on the other side.
I have a magazine interview with Ronnie Sox.The photo's included are of a 70 Cuda/Barracuda(with Shaker). One side has a hockey stick stripe the other a Barracuda emblem.
Good way for them to get two versions with only one car being at the photo shoot.
There might not even be a vin on it.

Maybe this was it's fate?
Interesting stuff Chris.  What's interesting on the car that must of been doing 150mph to crunch like that, is how the tail stripe is angled.  I don't like when the stripe is not perfectly vertical.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Why 3 holes, shouldn't there be 2?

Cool PI work Chris.

IIRC there are 3 holes Mike

Heres a pic from Jet's website www.69hemi.com

Reproductions only have two holes and they're parallel.  :shruggy:  I have a set of the smaller ones that were put on the trunk lid too and they only have two ho's as well.

Who you flippin' off in your avatar, the CHEVROLET trailer?

I have a repo set(for the doors)and it has three mounting points.
I did get them a long time ago so I guess the molds have been changed.

I believe that I have a larger clearer picture of the car in question around here somewhere and you can clearly see the trans cooler lines, indicating that it wasn't just 383 car with the HEMI badges on it for a photo, but more than likely a HEMI car.

RECHRGED

Chris,

After reading this thread (thanks again for making sure I didn't miss it), I went through a whole drawer full of brochures and information just to make sure I didn't miss another use of that XP Hemicar.  GREAT find in making the connection with the full-line brochure. :2thumbs:

I also tried to find the thread(s) where we kicked around the transmisison cooler lines and visible torque boxes in the press photo pictures.  From what I remember now, we were just getting into that whole line of discussion when the old D-C.com site crashed.  I seem to remember even dragging out an original press photo of that car I still have when we were B.S.'ing at Carlisle back in 2005.  That was right before the old site crashed, and the same year I bought my famous headlamp...   :rotz:

So far, I haven't found anything else in my stuff that might be related to that car which hasn't already been mentioned already.

Oh, and the picture of that crash test car makes me wince every time I look at it.  EVERY time.

Ghoste

Makes you wince?  Imagine how that poor dummy feels.

Plus the fact that it was a Charger 500. :o

OK What makes you say it's a 500?
The trunk lid in the top half of photo looks like a regular unit.

Ghoste

I'm curious too Gene, the copy I have is no better than what is posted here.  I've blown it up but I can't find any clues that make me certain one way or the other.

The stripe is blank, which leads me to believe it to be a base probably 318 powered Charger. :P

Blank stripe didnt come out till '70.....unless it was a 69 test mule for the '70 model year...
Chris' '69 Charger R/T

Ghoste

Base cars had NO stripe, if you look a little more closely at the stripe right at the body line you can see that there is a cutout there but I can't make out if its RT or 500.
