Putting a Gear Vendor in the Charger

Last night I started the GV installation on my 68. A friend with a 67 B body installed one last spring with little trouble so I was hopeful mine would go as well! At first everything went right in, until I got to the speedometer 90 degree cable adapter. After about an hour & half with a hammer and filing down the outside of the 90 I was able to make enough room in the tunnel. If they only made a smaller 90 it would have went right in. I Hope to get the drive shaft cut down this week. This setup should make my 4.10 rear run like 3.23.

Where are you going to mount the switch that will engage the overdrive?

I'm not sure yet, I would love to see where others have mounted their switch?

I plan on putting a GV in this summer and I was thinking I would put the switch on my steering column.  I bought one of the aftermarket tilt columns from XV.  They have a switch that can be used for whatever located at the end of the turn signal stalk.  I have heard of others using the high beam switch on the floor.  I know Mr Angry has a GV but I don't remember where he said he put the switch.

They give you a floor switch with the kit. but I like the your switch in the turn signal setup I'm sure that will work great for you. I have the stock column.

Hey Pat... Congrats on the GV unit purchase  and great shots of the installation :2thumbs:
I hope to have one of those in my 67 Charger by the end of next year... Still building the engine at the moment however :popcrn:

Thanks again for posting the shots, it gives us future GV owners something to ponder :scratchchin:

I started out with the B&M shifter handle that had a switch in it (from GV).  When I changed to a Turbo Action shifter I went to the foot switch and mounted it about 4.5 inches below the dimmer foot switch.  Works fine.  I didn't have any problems with the 90* speedo connector though.  I just was sure that it was screwed on before trying to mount the unit.   Bob

i had to dimple the top of the tunnel really good to get the trans crossmember back up to its mounting holes

i have the 90 degree adaptor but haven't put it on yet, i'm pretty sure mines alot smaller than yours, i will have to get some pics out, i put the controller in the glove box and the indicator lights in the box that houses my stereo for now, haven't decided on the  switch it self yet,

I hope you don't have to test their 7 year warranty out. ;) Great spot for the lights! Pleas post any pictures you may have!
Thanks!

Hey, is that a 6 Speed emblem I see there? Did they give you 2 of them? How about a good close up shot ... are they metal or just decals?

Yes, They give you two plastic emblems. I'll put them on my tool box.

Pickup my drive shaft, had it cut down (14 ¾") and balance. Exhaust fit back in without modifying. Note you must use an H pipe not a X pipe exhaust with a Gear Vendor. And replaced the trans filter. All that's left is to wire the control box and the foot switch, fill the GV & trans and go for a road test! Almost ready for the Hot Rod Power Tour in June!

Very Nice Pat !  :2thumbs:

Too bad the US Cartool loop doesn't fit with the GV unit. Are you going to fab something up to replace it ? Hemi Doug had a custom loop made for his that looks real slick....it bolts on to the frame connectors. Very similar to yours ; Hemi/GV overdrive/TTI exhaust but his is a stick car which doesn't make any difference as far as fit is concerned.

Ron,
Thanks for the link, as I have yet to work out how I'm going to install a new drive shaft loop. Dougs setup looks great!

Just a quick FYi - I have 33,000+ miles on my GV unit in my Charger and the thing is BULLET PROOF! Keep in mind, this is also the car I use for track events, 3000 mile road rallies and autocross... you WILL love it, especially when you get used to "cruising" at 85mph...   :2thumbs:

What gear are you running? and what RPM are you at when at 85mph?
Thank!

Is there no possible way to run an X pipe or it just needs to be a complete custom job?

The TTI X pipe system will not work! But if you have a custom exhaust system made you could have the X pipe just aft of the GV.
Pat

i have a x pipe from MR.gas, got it years ago before the GV, i've put it together temorarily but don't like it, the X is right under the sump of the GV unit and therefor hangs down a bit, part of that is that i have exhaust cutouts between the X and the collectors, .    i put it all together for now cuase its just to damn loud in the garage when i do get it strated ocassionaly to work on it or turn it around to work on something else

Finished up the wiring for the GV, toped off all the fluids and hit the road for the 1st time this year. The GV works great! Cruising 65mph at 2900rpm with a 4.10 rear awesome!

I studied Pat's thread here in preparation for my own GV venture.. I'm going with this in the Daytona.. I think happier days await me in her....    :2thumbs:  I have one other person to contact locally that might be able to give me a noteable discounted rate, if not, I have another friend who can get about $250 off. That's enough to pay for the driveshaft modification..
