Go with a dual plane intake and as far as gears go, get a set of Richmonds off ebay and have them professionally installed. Unless you want to try and tackle it yourself with a service manual.  You should be able to do it but it will take some time and patience.

I didn't find any Richmonds on ebay but I did find them on this site for a good price...... http://www.peytonperformance.com/item--SCR82502-Sportsman-Gear-By-Richmond--SCR82502.html

What do you think?

I'd have to say, that seems to be a good price.  What's summit have them for $.
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

The 3.55 is a very good dual purpose gear and the price is in the ballpark....most ring & pinion sets go for ~ $200. The other thing you might want to consider is a suregrip unit....boiling one tire off the line isn't any fun.  :P

I guess you need to ask yourself what the long term goals are for this car. There's no point in dumping a lot of money into an 8.25 3rd member if your long term goals are to go with a Big Block.  ;)

Should I go with the cheaper set from summit? Whats the difference between the $160 set and the $280 set? I assume the cheaper one is more for street use?
Found this suregrip on Summit http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=DCC-4529273&N=700+304615+4294902626+4294925074+115&autoview=sku Will that do the deed?

So far I have the ring/pinion and the suregrip. Is that all I need to change gears?

BTW I am sticking to a small block. My wallet wouldn't like a BB :icon_smile_big: I don't know how you guys put up with me

Going from 2.71 gears to 3:55 would be a nice performance increase for the money.

My '71 Charger had a 318 when I bought it.  Just stock with a 2-bbl carb.   I bought an Eddy carb and intake kit thinking I would get a huge power increase...but I was 18 and didn't understand things.  It didn't do a damn thing, as far as I could tell, except burn a hole in my wallet.  Figure out what your engine specs are before you start spending money on top end (carb/intake) upgrades.  Is the engine all stock?

Are you going to tear down the engine or just do upgrades that allow the engine to stay in the car?  Maybe a modern electronic ignition would be a good idea.  Ron and others could help you with that option.  Think MSD/Mallory distro/Blaster coil...new plugs and wires.

I heard of a guy back in the day that had this rocken 318 and could roast the tires...he had NO money for serious engine work...he probably had steep gears. (3:91 or more)

I'm getting a carb/intake/cam. Eventually down the road I will take the engine out and do more mods but for now that will do :yesnod: The gears are definitely going to be changed out.

Money is not an issue for the engine work. I just don't want it to get to the point where I could have bought a 360 or a BB by the time I'm done with the 318.

Have you picked out a intake/carb/cam combo yet?  When I had my 318 a local Chrysler racer told me I could get 300HP+ out of my 318 if I did it right.

Good luck man, I'll be curious on your build.  :popcrn:

I haven't bought it yet. I'll try to stop being so damn confusing :icon_smile_big:   I should rephrase that to I know what carb and intake I am going to get. Just need to know what cam. I am going to order it all from the same site so I don't have to pay shipping twice.

I am going with this intake http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=DCC-4876335 and this carb http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL-1405

Not my choice for a carb, but then again I don't know much.  I would look at the 1406 model, comes with a choke. :Twocents:

When you say "not my choice for a carb", do you mean the brand or the choke?
Sounds good....http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EDL-1406&N=700+115&autoview=sku
also been looking at this cam....http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA-CL20-222-3

The brand.  Can't go by my opinion though.  It's inexpensive and should do an adequate job for your application.
I leave the why's to the experts who know much more than I.

Everyone seems to like Holley on here and on moparts. Hows this http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=HLY-0-80670&view=1&N=700+150+ ?

mikepmcs

That looks like a good one that will still be of some use when you get some power mods in the future.
I'd ask Ron and them guys to make sure though.
