Hi

After hearing Holley are going Bankrupt, i wanted to purchase some carburettors to be prepared for when I get myself a Hemi.

Basicaly here is whats going through my head...

472-528ci at 550 Horsepower. I want maximum torque out of it (650-800 whatever possible). If a certain ci would make more torque than another even though smaller, thats the 1 I would go for. So i am looking for a build between 472 to 528 cubes that will make the most torque (which ever cubic inch that ends up)

Having said that, it also needs to have a very mild cam in it so that when I cruise at 2000rpm it isnt drinking all the petrol as it would with a wild cam. Im not too interested in the most "peak" torque but the most torque on average over the power curve (which makes car faster than peak itself).

Given that kind of engine, what Holley carburettor would be the best?

Holley Dominator or Holley HP ?

Would I be best of with a single 4 barrel or a cross ram intake such as the original Hemi cars would give more torque, and therefor I need to buy 2 carburettors?

What size CFM?

Thanks

I would look at a 4150 style carb if you want descent fuel economy....Dominator carbs are not efficient.

A Proform 950 cfm double pumper would be an excellent choice for those power goals and maintaining some semblance of fuel economy.

I wouldn't bother using a Dominator on a mostly cruiser engine. I run one on my Hemi and its not the easiest carb to live with and the word "economy" is not in the vocabulary if you use a Dominator carb... I would recommend it, if you decide to go a more "race" route with your Hemi..

Thanks for that both of you, if a dominator is 750cfm, and a HP is 750cfm, why would the dominator be hard to live with when its the same size?

Could that be explained a little?

Out of all the carburettors, the dominators look like serious business, there my favourite looking  :-\

Oops. -Sorry, I though you ment the larger 1050cmf and over Dominator carbs..

Never run across anyone who used one of those 750cmf Dominators over here. Then again it could be an interesting carburetor to try out. If you buy one, let me know how it works out...

Thanks

So it is not the actual style of carburettor thats not efficient but the size (1000+ rather than 750)

Also

Ray Barton told me the X-rams would produce more torque than a single 4 barrel at that power level however another person said the fuel distribution sucks on the X-rams...

The Dominator also has a more aggressive fuel curve.  As for the cross ram info, there is some truth to both statements.

G-man

thanks Ghoste.

What you mean more aggressive fuel curve?

I might have a 426ci hemi lined up to be baught soon. Looks wise, dual dominators on a cross ram = awesome looking. Performance wise... thats what im after and hence dont know what to do, single 4 or dual 4 HP or Dom.

Positive and negatives to both (whats more fuel efficient keeping your foot out of it or is the the same, which makes more torque, which makes a broader torque curve which is better than peak for speed, which 1 will accelerate harder off the line given 550hp in both, which will get to the end of the quarter quicker, which will break sooner, which will be harder to keep in tune and by howmuch, howoften will either 1 have to be tuned/serviced etc)

Just trying to weigh up the pro's and con's to both. If its basicaly the same thing at that power level whichever way I go, then id rather go with the sexy looking dominators on the X-ram but i dont want to sacrifice performance/streetability for a "wow" factor in the engine bay (harder to tune duals isnt important as the wow factor is worth it, its the rest of it that matters)
