An idea....66-67 Charger folding rear seats in a 68-70.

I'm wondering if anybody has done this conversion?
Picture this: A Charger 500 back glass installed, with no package tray behind the rear seat.
1966-67 Charger seats in a 68-70 body, but with front seat foams and covers, and maybe even headrests.
A longer 66-style console would fit, as the floorpans are the same.
Since the early trunklid is close to the dimensions of a C500 lid, I'm thinking it would almost be the same interior dimensions.
Now, the spare tire well from a 66-67 trunk pan would fit exactly between the frame rails, as they're practically the same anyway.
The gas tank would change to the 66-67 or Coronet style. I'm not certain if the filler neck would impede into the spare wheel well, but the filler is on the left side anyways.

I'm guessing the trunk floor buildup and deck of a 66-67 Charger would cover the shock mount area.
As the cross bracing behind the seat would have to be removed, is there anything on the earlier Chargers that reinforces this area, and prevents trapezoidal movements?

I think this would look a whole lot cooler than a bench in the back, and infinitely more Charger-like.

Magnumcharger

Yes, that is ALMOST exactly what I'm talking about.
He left his package tray in place, and put the console on top of it....??

I'm more interested in what it would take to do a second-gen Charger up as the fastbacks were, open and cavernous inside.
The C500 backlight is the major difference in the profile of the vehicle, making a true fastback out of a second gen.
Anybody got a good picture of an empty '66-'67 Charger for reference?

i just deleted an ebay ad someone was selling acomplete set of seats and full length console :brickwall:

you would also have to get the steel floor from one for the carpeted area to tie the sides of the car together since your taking out the structural pieces that are behind your seats now

There's no use in removing the package tray to move the seats back farther. There isn't enough ceiling to justify it unless your only rear passengers are five years old. That is also a major reinforcement against torsional deflection.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Pure Vision Design already built a 1968 Charger with a First Generation interior.  I think the story was in Mopar Muscle last year.  I personally like how it came out......

If you were to look further back to the date of the inception of this thread, you'll see that my question predates the Pure Vision concept car by quite a few years. As far as loosing structural strength behind the seat, I would suggest reinforcing the area in the style of a 1966-67 Charger, or a 1967-69 Barracuda.

Now that looks great! In my opinion! The Charger was supposed to be the flagship of the Dodge fleet, and as far as the external appearance goes, it totally is. But Dodge dropped the ball in 1968 by sharing the interior almost completely with the Coronet R/T. It should have been more distinctive, which was the reasoning behind the Pure Vision concept. Well done I say!

Don't forget the 68 Road Runner. Really, all B-Bodies share a lot of interior parts.  :Twocents:

The reason for the garden variety interior in the second gen was cost savings. If memory serves, they saved $13 per unit by using the regular back seat as opposed to buckets.

I like the idea of fold down seats and a pass through function for cargo (my other cars all have it too), but then again the girlfriend likes the back seat just the way it is from the factory...

Having had a 1st gen, she might like the way the seats fold down in those and offer extended room all the way to the taillight panel.  :naughty:

Ugh that instrument cluster is hideous!

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree:

I don't see the need to mess with an already classic gauge cluster :puke:

Ghoste

Nor I, the 68-70 Charger cluster is one of the best looking ones from the musclecar era imo.

which runs second behind the first gen cluster....IMO   :slap:

Ghoste

I respect your opinion, especially since you have both to look at.  I liked the 1st gen one a lot but I do still like my 2nd gen one better.  Just my opinion though.  And I have to admit the 3rd gen rallye cluster is pretty badass too.

How about the second generation dash with electroluminescent lighting....(just trying to keep the peace....LOL)

Ghoste

Seriously?  Are you trying to put el in a different cluster?  That would be an interesting project.

kab69440

My best idea so far has been a Lexan backing plate with the guts from a bunch of aftermarket gauges affixed to the back. Laying the EL film on top and using a Mylar cover with the gauges' registers printed on top. One of these days when there's 3k burning a hole in my pocket, yhat's what I'm going to do.
