You know, I haven't had a problem with trojan viruses or spyware/adware since I switched over to Firefox 4-5 years ago. Not that's entirely immune to those things, but with a little common sense you shouldn't have any problems.

A coworker brought in his daughter in laws box that got some crap called sysguard loaded.  It hijacks IE.
Of course, no restore points or any antivirus was ever used.
So far it's resistant to the common fixes.   Can get onto the web using firefox but that's not good for everything.    It resists all attempts to run any windows updates by hijacking the browser over to some spam junk.

I like my old IBM / Lenovo rescue and recovery....   although it eats a lot of hard drive.   I can restore to the last back up with 1 button.

Very true. The other two biggies are: "freeware" (including screen savers, toolbars, etc.) and stuff from file sharing sites without checking to see what it really is.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I got one a few months ago, It took out my spy, adaware, and killed both explorer and fox, I tried all sotrs of stuff and in the end I did a kill and re build on it! You will spend more time working at it and you may never get it, IMO start over!

I've been trying to stress that to my mom but she never listens. She goes and downloads a crap load of freeware toolbars, smiley programs for emails, and other useless junk and then whines to me when her laptop runs like crap. It runs like crap because its bloated with random crap and viruses mom!

I highly recommend these things to keep this from happening again.....

Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Web browser

*Get this add-on for it*   http://www.mywot.com/
And this one (might be a bit to proactive for must.... but great anyway)  http://noscript.net/

Spybothttp://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

Blocks KNOWN trouble files before they happen

PeerGuardian2 - http://phoenixlabs.org/

Blocks KNOWN intrusive IP addresses

Nod32 - http://www.eset.com/

IMHO easily the best anti-virus, light CPU usage and up to date

Foreman72

The folks there are really good, but you have to follow their instructions to the T. It's not hard to do, though. The instructions are very thorough and if there's something you can't do for some reason (like an online scan - but you can't access the Internet), they can work around it.
