Got a question guys. I just installed new parking light assemblies in my front valance and these are aftermarket pieces. I was wondering if the plastic housings need some type of ground wire to the chassis. The stock housings are/were pot metal and i'm not sure if those supply a ground.

Thanks, Ron

Ron,

On my 69 which I think are the same as the 68s, I had to make sure that I had bare metal to metal from the housing to the valence to get the light to work.  So I would say yes that it needs to have a grounding wire of some type if it is a plastic housing.

Would you be able to use a graphite paint in an inconspicuous spot to make a groud?

Dans 68

Yes, a ground is needed to the fender (wiring diagrams show a ground at the lighting fixture). Usually the screws that hold the assembly in place do the job. And graphite paint would probably work as long as it has a very low resistance, i.e., short path to ground.

I was thinking of the light socket to the mounting screw?

Dans 68

Yep. But the plastic fixture should have a conductive path to the screw built-in. Ron, what make are the aftermarket lights?

Dan, these are the housings that Charger specialties sells....housings are plastic but the lower mounting holes have metal inserts. I'm not sure if that is somehow connected to the socket assemblies to supply a ground.  :shruggy:

Ummmm, whatever.  I'd say the one heavily out-trumps the other in your case.  :yesnod:
