I was fortunate enough to find a Bendix booster in a 1970 Imperial in a junkyard.  I sent it out to Booster Dewey and had them redo it.  I don't think I could have picked a worse unit to have rebuilt either.  EVERYTHING in the one I got from the junkyard was toast except the rear half of the case.  Good news is, there is one more Bendix unit in the junkyard in another C body.  I'd grab it, but I can't get the doors on the car open plus it looks like it's going to be a major PITA to get that particular one out of the car it's in.
They are pretty much the same as the B body unit except the rod that attaches to the pedal correct?

Yup, they changed it out for me no problem.  I should have tried to get the other one instead, it's in much better shape than the one I got which ended up costing me a small fortune to have restored.

Just tried to put my new napa bought Bendix brake booster on today...AND IT DOESN"T FIT!!!!!!!!!The booted part that goes through the firewall will not go through when the bolt holes are lined up.My car originally had the mid-land ross unit and Im changing to the bendix unit as Im going with front disc brakes. My question is,Is the hole in the firewall the same size on all chargers? The booted rod that goes through the firewall is a little bigger on the bendix unit.Has anyone ever run into this?I could make the firewall hole a little bit bigger, but only as a last resort.Thought I was going to be on a roll today...Boy,was I wrong!

The firewalls themselves are the same for power or manual brakes....what does make a difference is the mounting plate.

This is a power brake plate

That's the plate I have. When I stick it through the firewall the bolt holes line up but the booted rod will not clear the upper part of the hole.

chargerguy111

Just tried it again. It's definitely not going through.Could I have gotten a crappy built booster?

chargerguy111

Thought I lucked out by finding a bendix booster but looks like Im going to have to take it back and either try my luck with another one....if they have one,or go with a mid-land ross.Any ideas?

Any way you can post a pic as to what you are referring to?  Im trying to visualize it but I dont see how it wont fit...

This is hitting the top of the hole in the firewall when the bolts are lined with the holes

The70RT

Probably sounds stupid but the bolts are offset some so make sure your vacuum port is on the top left. If you try upside down it will barley be off some like your referring to.

Tried that too, still wont fit.It likes more than an1/8'' to clear.Napa is ordering me another one.Hope I have better luck.Hopefully its just a manufacturing mistake. Are you sure all brake booster holes in the firewall are the same size? This blows my mind.

chargerguy111

Im thinking what 70RT said is right about the bolts being inserted wrong in the case.

Just 6T9 CHGR

Just for shits & giggles what are the diameter of the studs off the booster that go into the firewall? :scratchchin:

Anyway to post a pic of the back of the booster you have?

I just went through something similar on my 70 RR.  Ordered a unit for pwr disc and got something that looked different but was supposed to be as functional.  Wouldn't fit through the plate hole until I turned it upside down with the vacuum ports on the dvrs side upside down. Looked like they assembled it wrong. Turned it back in and waited over a week to get another and got something else different from that one but it did fit. My original was in the first pic, the installed one in the second.  If what I read here, the new one is for pwr manual and not pwr disc. What's the difference other than the shape?  Either way I have to stand on it hard initially to brake and doesn't seem to have much pwr assist to it but it does stop.  Could the unit difference itself be it or is there something else I can do?  Put on a new vacuum line and checked the intake fitting. Took the car to the store and let them try it and they told me to use it for a week to see if it gets better or they'll order another.  Never had to spend 3 weeks to get a booster and cyl. installed  :brickwall:.  My original core had already gone back to cordone.  Should have checked here first.  Any ideas ?  Booster rod just barely depresses mst. cyl. rod when assembled. Also put on new rotors, calipers, pads, mst cyl. hoses, and shoes.  All bled and no leaks.

What a drag. Sounds like a defective one  :brickwall:

Oldcarnut, could you tell me what kind of booster that is in the 2nd picture?

oldcarnut

472 R/T SE  i'll have to try and see what I can dig up.  I bought it from Advance -one of their remans.  Been so long since I've driven the car and in the mean time I've changed all the lines and blocks also.

After reading all of these posts, can someone tell me what kind of booster I have?  I was told it was 69 Charger, but after looking here, I am not so sure. Also, will this work for Disc Brakes?
Thanks for the help!

oldcarnut

Crud, I'm sorry I let this thread slip through the cracks  :icon_smile_blackeye:.  472 R/T SE I'll call Advance tomorrow and see what they have on my record as selling me.

Over @ the Registry a member is doing a restoration on his car & has that booster, a single diaphragm Bendix.  His car also came from the factory with drums all around.

He was told it's a field booster, likely installed at the dealership.  It's for drum brakes, same with your master.
The booster for disc requires more line pressure, the drum's not capable for that.  Some say your booster & MC will work, I've heard some say that's how they went.  But he couldn't lock up the brakes & emergency braking was non existent.

You'll need the 8" Dual Diaphragm Bendix Power Brake Booster & a mc that has 2 different size reservoirs.  One big for the disc.  Below pix are what you'll need.  I need to warn you, the Bendix dual is pretty spendy.  Imo, part of the reason for the cost is the same booster is used for PDB Hemi cars.  If it's hemi anything, you can plan on the price doubling, DAMHIK.  ;)
You'll also need a different backing plate, Chris shows one up in Reply #34.
I also heard Ramman has a hydroboost system for $595.--

Mike, AFAIK the Bendix HEMI boosters had different sized (larger) studs, and they were placed in a slightly different position. Big block cars had a different Bendix booster.
