heheh sorry for the wait guys. I'll explain now.

I've been talking to a local Drive-In movie theater place in my area. Durring the spring and until the school year starts they only run movies on the weekend. So I was thinking, wouldn't a Car show / Classic movie night be a great idea... I sat on this idea and didn't do anything with it... but that annoyed me.

I went to the theater and started to speak with the owners <They own a furnature building in front" and told them of my idea. I explained why I think it would be great to the drive in and of course, would help the local car scean.. after about a day or so of talking. They saw the value in this... I explain that me and my friends would work on putting the show together. They would just need to get 2 classic movies. We didn't want any money. Just wanted to see if it would work.

Today, after a few weeks of talking. They agreed to do it :)

My 2 friends own the body shop that my Charger got finished in... they have put shows togther and have a good history of it.. I'm the organizer and the one that will head up this venture. I pulls some favors and made some calls <I have lots of connections> we'll be getting radio ads, Newpaper articles and a lot of free publicity... I'm stoked!

We will be doing this on May 28th.... that's our day, Thursday night... the movies will be....

American Graffiti and yes.... *drumroll* Dirty Mary Crazy Larry!!!!!!!!!!

I've been calling friends all day and already have most of the staff assembled.... This is going to be HUGE!

A few things need to be finalized... We think we have a great Live 50's - 60's live band, we'll have cars under the screen that are represented in the movie as well.... any advice and ideas are welcome... I just had to post it up!

Okay, where abouts is this located because I want to be there. I remember during the M-Nats in 1985 they had a movie night in Ann Arbor, MI. They showed a regular movie along with Christine, it was really cool.

thanks for sharing the great news.

Awesome!

We used to have a drive in, here, but, unfortunately, the screen was destroyed in one of the tornadoes that hit us last summer.  No plans to rebuild, either. :'(

Thats too bad man, I've always been into the history of a drive-in. I hate hearing when one shuts down or is destroyed. This one in Malta actually just put UP a second screen. Thats how I got the idea that it was possible. Each screen will hold about 500 cars :)

Cool car show idea. I used to really like going to the drive ins as a kid, then when I was older with my own car & girlfriend.  :D

PT posted links I was almost going to post myself.

There's an abandoned drive in theater right here in Newburgh, NY that almost reopened once. It was already closed when I moved here in 1989, but in the early 90's someone in NJ was repairing the building where the concession stand & projector was. The steel framing for the screen is still there too. The plan was to also have flea markets in the daytime on the weekends, but they never got permission from the town to do it.

Turns out that the drive in is adjacent to a very upscale neighborhood that overlooks the Hudson River, & the people there freaked out over the idea of flea marketeers in their backyards. The property owner said the only way he could make the project work & be profitable in the long run, was to have the additional income from the flea market. It went back & forth at town meetings, but the owner died during that time & the plan died with him.

The property is a huge, overgrown, eyesore on the main road (NYS Rte 9W) that has been that way for 20 years that I am aware of. I don't understand how the local residents think that a daytime flea market on the weekend is any worse than the dumpy, craphole welfare motels near the drive in, that have the police there on a regular basis. Makes sense to me to fix it up, show movies & have the flea markets.

So Khyron, make sure you post the car show info right here on the forum. Something like that would be a nice overnight family trip.  :2thumbs:

I know the drive-in in Malta well. I remember when my daddyd used to take me to the Dix drive-in in Glens Falls when I was a kid. We had a 69 Belvedere station wagon that used to be an old police car.  Still had the spotlight on the driver's side and everything.
Out of curiosity, are they still going to hold the crusie-ins at Guptill's Arena this year?  I know last year there was some scuttlebutt that they might put an end to them due to decreasing numbers.  I didn't see that myself, but with money what it is, you never know...

tommymac

?????? Guptils,What decreasing numbers,You couldnt find a spot to park any more cars, the last one I went to in Sept.Ill check the local cruise guide and see.

General_01

That sounds like a cool time. Let us know how it works out.

There used to be a drive-in about 2 miles down the road from us. It closed down about 5 years ago. The owner sold the property to a developer who built houses there. We have a friends who bought a house in the new development. We only went a few times to the movies there.

When I was a kid, my parents used to take us to a drive-in called the Twin 100's I think. :scratchchin: We had a Chevy station wagon and me and my sisters would sit on the roof and watch the movies. When we fell asleep, my parents would lay us down in the back and drive home. Good memories. :icon_smile_big:
