73 Charger Bumpers

Hello fellers 

I want to move my bumpers back to where they are on the 71-72's eliminating the bumper filler used in 73-74. I was told all I needed was the front and rear brackets off a 71-72 ans its a bolt up deal. Well.. yes and no. The rear 72 brackets work fine sitting the bumper just right,,, the front however is a different story all together. The brackets are shorter and not long enough to reach both holes in the frame. They DON'T line up in and out either. They are actually further out then the 73 brackets. I would have to make bumper fillers out of 2X4's (easier to find too) 

Anywho,, has anybody done this? Guess I will spend the day fabricating tomorrow,, its gonna rain anyway. Oh,, BTW,, I'm adding hideaways too

As you found out, the fronts do not work. You will need to elongate the holes in your 73 brackets.

Looks to me the inner Y will still hit the frame before its back far enough. Have you done this?

I have not but that is what I remember people doing. Check out this site for 71-74 specific stuff.

You do have to remove the inner braces if you want it as far back as possible.  Use a grinder to break the weld that holds the 2 braces together.  With the bumper positioned where you want it, mark the new holes toward the back.  The front holes may even end up in the angle of the outside "Y" brace.

Do not grind.  The holes for the 71-72 front brackets mount differently than the 73-74.  AS stated the only thing you need to do is elongate your mounting holes from the 73 brackets.   That is the only way to get it to work.

The difference is this, 71-72 brackets has offset holes, while the 73-73 brackets are lined up.  Compare them and you will see the difference.

I am going to cut the bolt holes in my bumper brackets for front bumper to get rid of filler does any body have the measurement of how far to extend that slot   Thanks in advance

I DID THIS BUT I CANT SEEM TO GET MY SE GRILLS TO FIT RIGHT, THERE GOOD IN THE MIDDLE BUT THE OUTSIDES STICK OUT WAYY TOO MUCH

You might want to switch your gas tank filler neck to a 71-72 neck as the 73-74 necks sit out a little further. I believe either will be fine but using an earlier neck puts it a little further twards the front of the car since the bumpers were closer in, makes taking the cap off easier.

Like Charger 74 said elongate the holes. 73,74 brackets aren't welded together by the way. I've done this for people more than one time, but myself I think everything about the 73,74 looks better than the 71,72 models.

So when I add the 72 hideaways to my 73, I use the 73 brackets instead of the 72? I was under the impression I needed the 72 frame brackets and bought some.

If your referring to the brackets from the bumper to frame mounts, then no, they won't work.   You really should not have to do much to add the hideaways as far as I know.    As stated, 72 mount very differently than 73/74.

hideaways can be mounted in all 73/74 structure. Bolting locations are the same on bumper and reinforcements, no probs on that. Nothing to do with frame brackets what are the diff parts, due the diff frame rail height
