Dude, he knows it's high so there's not really any need to point it out. This guy is a legend in the Mopar parts world - mostly because his prices are insane. Sadly, he does have some things that no one else does and when someone is putting together a high dollar restoration and they absolutely must have a particular piece they have no other choice.

what is this thing anyway?
It's an old Driver's Education simulator.

Troy

how does it work?
Dunno, I'm not that old... ;)

I think there was a big screen in the front of the room and the students all sat in those simulators and "drove" while watching a film. I don't think any of the controls actually manipulated anything but I guess it was a good tool to get familiar with them. I just noticed that it has a column shift as well as a clutch pedal and floor shifter.

Troy

Yup, it was Chrysler's first Manumatic model, way ahead of its time. :icon_smile_big:

I "drove" one of these in driver's ed back in high school in the early 80s. I don't know if I'm that old but I do know
when you grow up in a small town it takes quite a while to get the latest equipment. The controls didn't manipulate
anything per se but if I remember right it registered your responses and compare them to what was happening on the screen at a given moment. However, you can imagine the accuracy of that technology was always being challenged.

Just 6T9 CHGR

A friend stumbled on a tractor trailer full of these things in the late 90's  12-14 or so.
I sold the steering wheels off them for 1k+ each.....made $100 for myself for each one just for listing it on ebay for him....those wheels are what got me hooked on ebay :rotz:

where they made of gold?

As close to NOS as you could get quite frankly yes.... $1250 was the highest I sold one for.
These wheels were always indoors & never exposed to sunlight....mostly what dries out the plastic & causes "outgassing" which makes the wheel crack & seperate....

I first learned of these fabled wheels before I knew of the internet from an ad in Mopar Collectors Guide back in '97 when I first got my car.

Ad read along the lines "Nice woodgrain steering wheel...no cracks $150"
Called the guy (yes I actually spoke to someone......and thinking about it today I wonder if it was anyone on here :scratchchin: ) sent him a money order for the $150 and a week later I opened the box & my jaw dropped!
Called the guy back & asked if he had anymore....he said he had 1 more and I immediately bought it with the intentions of flipping it for a profit.....my good nature gave out & I sold to to my friend to put on his '68 GTX for the price I paid for it.

For the life of me I can't remember what state the wheel was from but I do remember him telling me his wife was pissed at him for painting his car in the garage (which ran under his house) and the fumes were killing his wife & kids....

Woodgrain you can FEEL-----

Every winter I take the wheel off the car& bring it in the house where its warm for fear of it cracking in the cold.....even when I drive the car I mostly hold the spokes so not to wear down the grain.

Anal?  YES!!

Very nice wheel you have there Chris. I've been looking for several years now for a woodgrain wheel that I can actually afford without breaking the bank. Thought I had a lead on one last year for $350 but it wasn't all that it was advertised to be. OH well the search continues.

As far as franks prices, he has been high, but in all honesty if he got $950 for a rack back in the 80's at a time when you could have picked up a charger R/T for $1,500 then $10K for the same rack now would actually be cheaper in retrospec than it was in the 80's. Same charger now would be what $25-35K?

I was in the last class in my High School that had these models in a mobile trailer. There was a movie that was projected from the back of the room.

The movie had all Dodge Charger moving around the streets, it was cool as hell.  :drive:

I remember it was not working very well.
Everyone would drive it, stop at stop signs, turn with the movie.
It scored each student as to how they made each move.
Since it was broken, we where all driving 120mph down a residential streets.  :icon_smile_big:

That was the last time I saw the Chrysler simulators on school grounds.

I was 17 in 1983, so it was used up until then in San Diego Ca.
Then my mom bought me a 69 Charger to drive to school.
:scratchchin: You don't think Chrysler had some kind of mind control subliminal message in the movie?

My sister's second car was a 83 Dodge Charger.  :scratchchin:

$9,500 for a luggage rack!!!! I'm sure you could pay someone $9,500 to kick you in the nads too. Both both scenarios beg the question: "Why?" For something that detracts from the looks of the car and leaves rust stains on the paint after a while? If my car was coded for one of those monstrocities, I'd leave it off and add a Go Wing instead. Does anyone ever put luggage on them anyway?
