Hodges is restoring the #14 Pierce Brothers USAC Charger.     Ken Dehnel who is is a DSAC member also owns a Superbird.   I believe this is an older Nichels chassis updated to later '74 Charger skin.    It was a pretty well known car in the midwest driven by Roger McCluskey and Larry Moore.  It broke the wing car's lap record here at Milwaukee (shown in photo).

Yes Dave, that was John's other Daytona. I too could have bought it for a song and a dance back when I got mine. We probably would have bought it supposedly another club member wanted it so I backed off. I was already buying the R6 car and didn't want to be greedy. Looking at it now I sure wish that I had gotten it. Of course she was pretty rough and I'm sure it has been a major project. I do believe that it had the original 440 and 727. Also, I think one of the previous owners in Virginia may have talked to the original owner and got the Broadcast Sheet.

Thanks for sharing the pics. That 14# sure looks sweet as well.

Thanks Steve I thought that was the car as it looked familar .I can rememeber when people were putting down my daytona in its condition from being parked in 1977.And by no means it needed such a undertaking / resurrection as this one needed. :o :o :o :o

No problem

That's for sure, I can't believe that anyone would have put down your Daytona. I'd have taken that car in a minute.

Like I mentioned on the Y2 car, there was a club member that was supposed to get that car but then John's son ended up finding a buyer from Ky. It seemed to be important to John's wishes that the cars went to fellow club members who would enjoy them and not to the so called "flippers". The buyer from Ky didn't hang on to it too long and it was sold to a guy in VA. I am not sure if that is who Hodges bought it from or if there was another owner in there as well.

It's possible it was.  I don't think Ken the owner was able to actually nail down exactly what car it was before.   I think they were also too far along on the '74 Charger project to go backwards.   This was his fathers car, and they were busting hump to try and get it done before dad passed away.    They did not make it, but it looks like it is getting close.

What a shame, it looks like they used Shermans panels on the poor thing. Maybe they were put on before the release of the full quarters that are available now.   :shruggy:

Le Hodge's place is about 40 min from where I work. The Daytona as well as the Charger are super nice cars. The Daytona was in really bad shape to start and it has come along way.JW

You would think though for that kind of asking money, the pie pan on the air cleaner would be a Dodge, not a Plymouth version and the booster?....................... Guess they like the checker flags...

Kick butt car nonetheless............

And route the booster hose down below the air cleaner under the bracket.  I love that color also.  Not sure it will bring that money for the times?
Problem with cars like that is they cost so much and are so perfect, you don't want to drive them.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Interesting that this car has the woodgrain shift ball.  Mine has the chrome knob and my VIN is later than this one...

What's the ruling on the switch over from chrome to woodgrain???  :shruggy:

And not to be too pickey, but for that price the details matter, shouldn't the throttle return spring be green?

absolutely a great car.

I was told by several Mopar guys that you could get either ball throughout the year.  Mine is a Nov 68 car and had the chrome ball ( if it was original after 40 years ).

wayne perkins has been tracking them for years and all the original automatic cars he has ever seen from back in  the day have always had the chrome handle .  Only restored cars have shown up with the woood grain .

Personally I have yet to see a HEMI AT Daytona with a wood grain shifter knob on it. However the 440 powered cars are a different story. Seen them both ways. On the 500's though it seems to be a different story. I haven't seen many 440 powered 500's with a chrome knob, vast majority have the wood grain.

Is this an early / late thing or just a crap shoot as to what shifter knob you got?

maxwellwedge

You would think it was an early/late deal but crapshoot is the best technical explanation!
