Where is the engine stamping on a 74 318 that gives the year made, plant, etc. located at?

John_Kunkel

Look on the drivers side front of the block just below the cylinder head.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I did manage to read the numbers. GM318R 35190014. I belive it is a 71 engine. So, this could not be the original engine on a early production 74 year?

Ghoste

Not at the rate they were using 318's.  Hemi's were sometimes cast ahead and waited for a bit before being used but the 318 was a steady go.  And you are correct, it is a 71 engine by that number.

I also found the numbers 7181 411 stamped in front. What do they stand for? How do the numbers match on the small blocks?

GM318R 35190014;

G - series (model year) 1971

M - Mound Road engine assembly plant

318 - 318 CID

R - Regular fuel

3519 - Final engine assembly date from the 10,000 day calendar - March 17, 1971

0014 - 14th engine assembled at this plant on the day above.

For the partial VIN of the car it came out of, look on the passenger side of the engine for a raised pad. It is down low, about center (front to back), right above the oil pan rail.
