Reverse cooling will often allow a higher compression engine use lower grade fuel and still be knock (predetonation) resistant.

i got this from another post. im running 10-1 compression with 91 octane gas...highest in california. the engine runs fine until it gets above 170 degrees then i get some valve knock, especially on warm days. with a good octane booster this will go away, crappy octane booster it gets worse. is there any way i can reduce or eliminate this knock easily? i found this octane booster called "octane supreme 130" ive had many people claim it to be the only real octane booster that works, expensive as hell though. just curious will my near future air gap intake and 2'' open spacer allowing a scoop to stick out of the hood and bring in cold air bring down the knocks some? or retard the timing maybe? or am i stuck with using octane booster if i ever want to drive it hard?

and just out of curiosity, do edelbrock heads allow higher compression with lower octane gas because the alluminun is softer then stock iron heads? or because they displace heat better? i like to learn  :icon_smile_big:

reverse cooling an engine can make a big difference
alum absorbs heat faster allowing higher compression without detonation , generally  you can run 1 point higher compression with alum heads to get the same heat in the combustion chamber

can you reverse the flow with a stock water pump? or do you need a remote electirc pump?

I do not think you can do it with a stock?  I guess I would not know how.... I guess you could use the housing with a block off?  Then run a remote reverse through it?
