89 Dodge Spirit 2.5 Turbo, 150hp [Craigslist for the $450.]

:yesnod: Yes, very rare machine. This is the first year of the Dodge Spirit the name came from AMC after the merger. Also called the Plymouth Acclaim.

No rust on this 20 year old piece of history, runs like a turbo top, AC works, Cruise works, new tires on the rear. No rips in the original interior, paint is also original.

I will fix up the hood and grille, and get some hub caps.
30mpg, so I can park the truck which got 13.5 mpg.

The 91 Spirit R/T was the best of them all, sporting a 2.2 turbo III all came with 5 speeds and came only in white and red.

The engine was the 2.2 Turbo III, the third turbocharger setup CC had developed. Mopar engineers worked with Lotus to create the engine, which included Lotus-designed heads; it was the first four-valve-per-cylinder engine Chrysler had ever built, and featured balance shafts, a double overhead cam, and an intercooled Garret turbocharger. With the R/T's only transmission - the A-568 five-speed manual, created for that engine - it could reach 60 miles per hour in between 5.8 and 6.8 seconds.

Spirit R/T (2.5 turbo)    15.8 ETs
Nissan 200SX SE-R    17.5
Golf VR6 5-speed    17.0
Neon DOHC 5-speed    17.5
97 Corvette automatic    15.4
Stratus R/T            16.6
Contour SVT            17.2
Sunfire GT 5 speed    17.7
Escort ZX2 5 speed    17.9
94 Mustang GT 5 speed 16.4
98 Civic                    19.1

Nice!, I'm kind of looking for the same type of thing.  Daytona, Laser(mid 80's style), or even a mid 70's boat, I don't care I'm just looking for a daily runner that is cheap cause the owner just wants to get rid of it.
I'll even take a big wagon!  The one condition is they have to have the Mopar stamp.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

The thing is great!
The ad was up only 45Min's before I bolted over with cash in hand.
It's one of the cars that people over look, but Chrysler did a great job in building a solid machine.
I didn't even know about it till a friend of mine told me about a Spirit R/T turbo III that was on CL in New Mexico.

Nice!

I had a 1991 Spirit ES when I was in college. GREAT car. My mom bought it new when I was in middle school. It was white with tan interior and the cool honeycomb wheels. I sold it back in 02 after I got my 95 Crown Vic.

This pic isn't my old car, but this is exactly what mine looked like.

We also had an L-body 2.2 Charger back when I was a kid. I can't remember exactly when we sold it, but it was probably around 89-90.

My first car was a 1986 Chrysler Laser with Turbo. One of my favorite cars to this day. Fast as hell and the inside was all digital and talked!!! It was like the inside of Knight Rider or a spaceship.

GREAT SCORE... just that is more a Mitsubishi than a Mopar... or at least was in that way down here with 3 liters Mitsu engines I think!

I love them thought!!! I would like one of those as a driver... but preffers Lebaron( likes more the complete red rear look, and the complete luxury package ) :D

I bet your neighbors are happy to be able to view that piece of crap out front in the drive way! HAHA!

Looks like a good depot car!

I've always wanted to get an Omni GLHS; maybe in a few years I'll start looking for one once I owe a little less on my house.  :D Although now I'm feeling nostalgic for my old Spirit too.....

Those add-on fog lights are a definite deal-maker. :2thumbs:

The engine is 100% Mopar 2.5 which is a stronger block and has a taller deck then the 2.2

Ma MoPar made the whole thing.  :2thumbs:

Well, the fog lights are there because the left headlight doesn't work. It's a hillbilly fix, today I'm off to junkyard to find one.

I'm on second shift and get off work at about 9:00pm. I need LIGHT!

Your car is a common block.
It shares the same block as the 2.2. They switched to this block in 89.
What Makes it not a 2.2 is that the 2.5 has a larger stroke.
Your 2.5 is what's called a high torque 2.5.
You are pushing close to 200 lbs. Of torque.
My advice is to go larger on the exhaust (better gas mileage and maybe An added 20 horses) and intercool the car (car is prone to detonation)
Then you safely and effectively crank your boost from 8 to 15 #'s of boost.
If you need any help with the car let me know I am close.

They're very addicting, and a nice brake from high priced muscle cars.
Just a few hundred bucks and your flying down the road.

My buddy has the white Plymouth Sundance with a 2.5 intercooled converted to a RWD with a ford 9 inch. He does 11.50 in the 1/4.
All the parts came from the Junkyard, other than a reprogrammed computer and the turbo is off a Dodge diesel truck.
Looks totally stock too.  :smilielol:

Feels like the 80s when you could get any Charger part you wanted from the junk yard.
I miss the old days.  :rotz:

Never had one of the 2.5 car, but have had my share of the 2.2 cars. And they are quite a bit of fun. Had #208 of the 1987 GLHS when I was in college, as well as 2 92 IROC R/T Daytonas and 1 93 IROC R/T Daytona,  3 91 Spirit R/T's. All great little cars.

Always wanted one of the black IROC R/T Daytona's but never had a black one, just 2 red ones and 1 green. All 3 of the Spirit R/T's I had were red. Something about that color attracts me don't know what it is.

Is that thing the same as my 90 new yorker beater? Mines got a3.3 v6 and has lasted allot longer than I ever thought it would, well over 200k and still no leaks or rebuilds, timing chain must be going finally tho, she pops back through the intake if you don't take it easy.
