I got a $1,000 bucks buring a hole in my pocket and I would like to dump my stock 440 ignition system in my 73 for something a little more updated.  Been looking at MSD setups but not sure what distributor, ignition control and coil setup I should go for at or around a $1000 bucks.  I dont think I get enough fire for my big block and I think my distributor has been acting up so its time to get it ready for driving season with a little more bang.

if you have $1000 around, you can go for complete MSD system. Distribuitor and Coil ( specially the distribuitor )are the best pieces  of the setup. Module HONESTLY for a street car is not a Big Deal IMHO. Chrome box is simply more than enough.

On a tight budget I would never think on MSD for street use since doesn't need really. For an upgrade without headache ( MP distributors need to be detailly checked before mount ), then the fist step up would it be those.

msd 7al, 8251 coil, and a set of Firecore wires from Ron should do the trick.

QuoteIf I had the money I would get this MSD ready to run distributor you don't need an ignition box an easy to adjust the advance 2thumbs

well whats the MSD box buy people? is it for RPM range past 7000 or something?  I want something hot for both street and strip, I do like a little fun between cross roads out in the sticks once in a while.     My car is not all under 55mph all the time.

I like the MSD 6AL with the soft touch rev limiter. The MP electronic distributor works fine....i've never used anything else.  ;) A blaster coil and a good set of Firecore wires and you're ready to rock.  :icon_smile_big:

LOL... I would make the opposite... mainly because out of the box MSD dist is BETTER PIECE than MP distributor ( personally experienced )... and well.. ign box... $500 against $60 getting ALLMOST same good results ( except maybe on a 10-12 seconds car ) says everything LOL.

Of course I'm talking on a low budget upgrade from old stock parts without any headache in the process

of course if the money is there, Full MSD system is GREAT.

and of course, Blaster ( or MP what is the same ) coil with good spark plug wires gets the round deal

Well Natcho, we all have our opinions.  :icon_smile_big: Sure the MSD distributor is a nicer piece but it won't make a lick of difference performance wise....yes, i have tested them back to back. Once the timing curve is dialed in there is no difference....NO DIFFERENCE  :slap:

Now when it comes to ECU's i have to disagree with you....MSD is by far superior to the MP chrome/orange box. Multispark technology cleans up the idle and improves the fuel burn. Better combustion, cleaner plugs and stronger throttle response. Of course you need to match good wires or it's not going to reach it's potential. If you want to run $30 cheapo wires with any ignition system you are leaving a lot on the table.  :Twocents:

Someday, when you build a real performance street/strip engine and start tuning it you will understand.  ;)

hahaha, yes maybe...

well talking about distributor I'm not talking about performance itself like built quality... I got lot dissapointed with MP one spend $170 and then need GOOD AND HEAVY adjustments everywhere, but a friend of mine got an MSD unit and GOD, THAT THING REALLY WORTHS EVERY PENNY on build quality.

and about Ignition modules, of course I'm not talking about experience like some comparative table somebody did at Moparts with race results using several units. ;D.

yeah I know, I know, I'm a newbie on this LOL
