Think this guy didn't want anyone to know he was in NYC ????

"Another passenger, Fred Berretta, who was on his way home to Charlotte from a business trip, told CNN doors were opened on both sides of the plane "as soon as we hit the water."

Fred Berretta!!!!

Berretta---the tv cop!!!!!

Fred----- his bird!!!!

Don't go to bed, with no price on your head - No, no, don't do it.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time - Yeah, don't do it.

And keep your eye on the sparrow.

When the going gets narrow.

Don't do it, don't do it.

Where can I go where the cold winds don't blow,

Now. Well, well, well.

It is possible that the gentleman's name is Fred Beretta you know.  But I like your theory better.

Now if he would have said a name like
Anthony Benandetti of the Camallary crime family or Gert B Frobe or Clem  then I would agree with you 100%

Hey, You're talking to me all wrong... It's the wrong tone. You do it again and I'll stab you in the face with a soldering iron. Hey, tell me, does your mother sew? BOOM. Get her to sew that!

I'm just glad everyone mad it out of that wreck safely and with only one real bad injury(2 broken legs)
Kudos to the Aircrew for not giving up and saving that flying turd of a plane that is the Airbus.

It's kinda scary what a bird can do to an Airbus. :o

Cody, a bird strike can do that to any plane.  Bird strikes are not uncommon, but can be disastrous.
They make a mess when they hit the windscreen as well.  Man, the smell is terrible too.

He was referencing Anthony Vincenzo "Tony" Baretta(baretta tv show)

Baretta's birds name was Fred.

Merely pointing out the fact that a survivor on the plane might have used an alias because he didn't want to be identified.  So he picked Fred(tony's bird's name) and Baretta(Tony's last name)

Later, he was known to kill his wife...... :eek2:  Funny thing about Berretta, he was one filthy looking dude....he missed seeing soap bubbles for a long time on that show.... (in fact, he looked like some parts vendors I met at the Mopar Nationals)  :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:

Robert Blake's real name is Michael James Vincenzo Gubitosi(which might explain the deeper skin tone making him appear to be a little on the dirty side)and don't forget he was in the little rascals as well.

My wife is a flight attendant for Northwest, we were watching it as it happened...it was neat to have her comment on what was going on, due to her training.

Awesome crew and passengers on that flight!!!

:iagree: Especially to the pilot, that's probably a situation that a lot of pilots may not have handled as well.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28683246/?GT1=43001 Like he knew what he was doing:

"Civil engineer Robert Bea, co-founder of UC Berkeley's Center for Catastrophic Risk Management, said he could think of few pilots as well-situated to bring the plane down safely as Sullenberger.

Sullenberger is a former fighter pilot who runs a safety consulting firm in addition to flying commercial aircraft. He had been studying the psychology of keeping airline crews functioning even in the face of crisis, Bea said.

"When a plane is getting ready to crash with a lot of people who trust you, it is a test," he said. "Sully proved the end of the road for that test. He had studied it, he had rehearsed it, he had taken it to his heart."

Sullenberger, who has flown for US Airways since 1980, flew F-4 fighter jets with the Air Force in the 1970s. He then served on a board that investigated aircraft accidents and participated later in several National Transportation Safety Board investigations.

He is president of Safety Reliability Methods, a California firm that uses "the ultra-safe world of commercial aviation" as a basis for safety consulting in other fields, according to the firm's Web site."

How's that for an advertisement for his company. :2thumbs:

I figured Military background.  Fighters are the ultimate training ground for sure and only a handful can do it in the world.  Awesome!!!!! What a great story for the passengers, now that it is over of course.

Here's what happens to the fan blades when a foreign object hits them, the missing chunks of metal are then ingested into the core engine and the damage escalates until bits and pieces come flying out.

There were already a dozen movies similar to that where Russians/Chinese/terrorists take over plane and try to kill (insert whichever) to get X amount of dollars. Usually these movies have Harrison Ford in them too, pretty played out movies imo.

"In the unlikely event of a water landing..."

I was watching the news from a cruise ship in St Maarten, and had to get on a plane the next day.  Two movies that  were playing on the cruise:  Titanic and Airplane.  These guys are real freakin' comedians!

Seriously, when was the last time you ever saw a successful plane crash into water?  It's only happened once before where everyone survived, in Russia in 1963, 52 passengers and crew.  Sully should go into the pilot's hall of fame for that one.

A friend of mine's son was on that plane, in the back.  That water was COLD, and they really thought they were going to drown inside the plane before they got out. It was very scary inside for several minutes.

AKcharger

Well let me share another version of the story... but I preface this with the statement of unless you've been there you don't know what it's like so I'm not judging either way.

I was jumpseating with some US Air guys on an Airbus from ANC-PHX and the subject of ol' Sully came up, they have slightly different take on the hero story. According to them the data showed birds took out one engine but the other was still making power. The crew pulled both throttles back to idle (for restart) and that's where they stayed. (1:09-1:14 on recording) and the Co-pilot even remarked the Lt. engine making power (1:39-1:41). They said Sully screwed up and destroyed a plane when he could have simply pushed the throttle up and flown back to LGA.

By the time all this was known the "train had left the station" and Sully was a national hero and there was absolutely no way the company was going to say he goofed.

I'd believe the FHA report (available on line, conclusion = both engines damaged to point of no thrust, and no pilot error) long before I put any stock in a couple of bored guys shooting bull.

Nothing like Monday morning quarterbacking. Yeah, the engine was making thrust but was it enough to pull the aircraft out of its predicament?

 :shruggy:

If this was coming from some weekend Cessna pilot it would be MMQ. But coming from pilots from the same company flying the same airplane going through a training program privy to every detail of the accident...I give it a bit more credence.

I'm not arguing anything...everything turned out OK, but there's ALWAYS more to ANY story, that's my point

What right isn't always popular...and what's popular isn't always right

flyinlow

FADEC  (full authority digital engine controllers) equipped engines are great when they are working correctly. In this case I thought the damage to the inlet temp/pressure probes was enough that the FADEC could not get more than idle thrust from the engine. While an idling engine would provide electric power, hydraulic power and bleed air, it would not do more than stretch your glide a little. I takes about 40-50% thrust from one engine to keep a two engine Airliner flying at minimum safe speed a couple thousand feet above the airport.

Given the prospects of landing short of the runway in Teterbourgh or La Guardia, that miles long stretch of mostly empty ditching space looked like the best choice.

I thought the crew did great with a bad situation and little time. :Twocents:

bull

Here's a dumb question; how come there's no bars or screens at the front of jet engines to avoid catastrophic bird strikes or dudes walking around on the flight deck strikes? I'm sure it has something to do with thrust flow or something a novice like myself has little/no knowledge of.

Mopar Nut

It won't be long that terrorists are using drones to take down planes.

Quote from: bull on April 05, 2015, 02:00:19 PMhow come there's no bars or screens at the front of jet engines to avoid catastrophic bird strikes or dudes walking around on the flight deck strikes?

Nah, not stupid...two reasons main reasons:
1) to have a screen effective enough to prevent bird strike to would have to be smaller than chicken wire but but as strong/thick as rebar.  So air restriction, weight and you'd have to heat it or it would gather ice when flying through clouds and you'd have ice FOD threat

2) risk management...it just happen enough to justify cost. Plus there's all kinds of programs at airports to disperse birds from trained falcons, to "bird guns" to letting the grass grow high.
