Im thinking about building my own rotisserie simply because I dont have the funds in the budget for one that is built professionally.  Anybody else done this?  Ive got a set of plans that look like it'll work, but id like to see what people think prior to me taking off on building this thing.
thanks

Their pretty easy to build lad... as long as you have the skills and the iron to build it, I wouldn't hesitate. It's really just a question of how fancy you want to get.

Magnumcharger

I built my own, and I'm no "rocket surgeon".
I looked a several on the internet, and picked ideas from all of them.
Mine works very well, I can rotate my Charger with one hand, so the center of balance is exactly right.
If I remember correctly, it cost me around $450 to build, and I had it done in a weekend.
Since making mine, I have seen even more pop up, and most of them have more features then mine.
So I redesigned mine on paper, and after my Charger is off of it, it's getting a whole new look.

Hey Robin!
Will you add the measurements to your plans?

Thanks

Magnumcharger

Here you go.
Keep in mind, I took some of these measurements off of my old rotisserie, and put them in where I thought there might not be too much of a change from the original idea.
As well, although it worked very well for me, I have no idea how you intend to use it, so if you feel like improving my design, feel free to do so.

That's a great set of plans. I was going to buy one of Eastwoods rotisseries but I think I will try to build one now. :2thumbs:

what size are the hydrolic rams? what cost and fluid do you use? electric pump, or hand pump?
third string oil changer

Magnumcharger

I'm guessing maybe a three-foot high hydraulic ram?
I'd go with a hand-actuated version, for cost and for control.

Pretty sweet. I need to move so I can have room for something like that.  Thanks for taking the time to post that info!

I think they sell the hydraulic ram that's used on the cherry pickers as a separate item at Harbor Freight.  As I recall, it's 8 tons capacity.  Ought to work nicely for the rotisserie.

yoink! :D

finally something else i can build in my welding class! :coolgleamA:  and use too! :icon_smile_big:

I was going to post mine - that evolved from ChargerBill's plans - but that one pretty much covers all the bases and some.
Now I want to build one like that and I don't think I'll need a rotisserie anymore.

Good job magnum!  :2thumbs:

I just ordered two to build my own rotisserie. They are $39.99 each and only $9.99 to ship. The part #36397-2VGA.

I'm just wondering if anybody has any further information to share on this topic?
Anybody built one based on my plans?

no but i like the "very messy unfinished shop"  :icon_smile_big:  which is probably suitable to everyone on here..

I built one a few years ago using one in shop that was occupied at the time as a guide. Ends up the metal/steel is exspensive. I used a mig welder instead of a arc welding better suited for thicker metal & after about 8 hours of non stop welding I fried some Diode in welder & the all wires (internal & external) were getting pretty hot. Metal prices even steeper nowadays. I dont think you'll save much making your own. Also, The only Rotisserie's I ever used I like had the 2 pole set up running from end to end, not one connecting the ends. One no good & cheap & flimsy in my opinion. Also the hand crank the best set up. A company in South Carolina makes thge best ones which are usually light blue metallic in color. LEON.

My rotisserie is a little crude, but it gets the job done.  I've had 3 Chevelles, a 67 Jaguar, a 73 Cuda, and my Charger on it.

Lots of good ideas here.  What does a typical mopar body weigh when stripped?  I agree about the cost of materials to build one.  I also wonder if some people overbuild them.  I think a of of DIY guys build them to last, thus maybe more $$.
