I've got a '71 383 in a '68 Charger, and I'm trying to round everything up for it. I'm wondering what kind of pump this is and if it will work for my car? If I'm not mistaken, it's the Saginaw type? Are brackets to make this work for me easily available?

GreenMachine

That looks like the Thompson pump. Slightly larger than the Federal and has a larger return.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

Thank you guys for all of the help! I'm still on the hunt for a Saginaw! If anyone has one or knows a good place to get a rebuilt one let me know!

Thanks Ron! I wrote that one off after the Saginaw one had sold, but now that it's available again I sent him a personal message.  :2thumbs:

Check out places like Oreillys, Auto Zone, and the like.  Or Rock Auto.  The Saginaw came in a early version and a later version.  I early version has the round bottom (like the federal pump) and uses the bolt on pulley with woodruff key.  The later version generally uses the press on pulley and has the egg shaped housing.  I think the pressure outlet on some of the later ones might be different.  Don't recall for sure.  Also, the orientation of the return pipe may be a little different.  I don't think there is any difference between them functionally.  The early version housing is hard to find.  There a zillion of the egg shaped housing types.  I think the bolt on pulley would be preferred.  At least on 440's, you need a large pulley.  Bouchillon Performance has the larger pulley as well as the nut.  Both Bouchillon and 440Source have the bracket kits to mount on a big block.  I am thinking that the 68 Charger actually came with the Federal pump while the 69 Charger came with the early saginaw pump (the 69 C bodys got the federal pump).  As far as the function of the pump is concerned, it probably wouldn't make any difference which one was used.  Almost forgot, the cap on the early saginaw is metal and not painted.  They went to a plastic cap in the early 70's.  Almost forgot, the metal cap is hard to find but you could use the plastic one until you found a metal cap.  I'am talking about the Saginaw here.  But I think the Federal pump used the metal cap too---don't have any idea how hard that cap is to find.

Note that if you order a Saginaw pump for an application/year where the round bottom oval spout type was originally supplied (ie, the early Saginal) you will get a egg shaped reservoir (read later style reservoir) pump cause thats all they have.  If you could find the earlier type reservoir in good shape somewhere, you could retrofit it onto the newer pump.  The plastic fill cap will fit both types of reservoirs.  Since you will be making sure that the pump you buy is a woodruff key bolt on pulley arrangement, you can order the pulley from Bouchillon and put it on yourself.  Be careful if your car normally came with a Federal Pump as the pressure hose specified probably would only fit it.  You would need to order a pressure hose for a 69 to get the right one.  Have fun.

Well it looks like someone got to that pump before me (again, hehe) Ron but that's all good.

Chatt69chgr,

Thank you so much for all of the information! That helps me a lot for when the sellers don't even know what they have! I feel a great bit enlightened now. I guess there's one thing good about starting with no brackets, hoses, etc. haha. I really appreciate that man.

. . . 'till the next episode, the hunt continues!

another stuff to think is the propper bracket... pre 72s use diff than post 73s, due the water pump outlet below it!

Thanks for that! I sure wouldn't know by looking about the brackets, but I suppose if I get this one I will simply see if it'll fit and if not I'll grab the right brackets from one of the suppliers.

Nacho-RT74

is not that hard... earliers brackest are aligned to bolt to water pump housing. Laters brackets, in front uses two, one of them longer to fit lower the pump, and rear doesn't align with front bracket on top because pump bolts directly to block, and is bended, not flat
