I'd WD-40'd the cylinder walls while I was waiting to complete assembly of the engine, little grease too.

Should I wipe them before I put the heads on?  Just wondering.  Thanks.

Its hard to get a new engine too clean. I would wipe grease and any dust off and oil cyclinder bores to fill crosshatching before head installation. :Twocents:

:iagree: clean the bores real good before bolting the heads on.  :2thumbs:

What's the best way to clean the bores?

flyinlow

The method I use on an assembled short block before installing the heads:

Use a clean lint free towel wetted with carb cleaner or similar solvent until a clean towel stays clean.

Soak a clean towel in motor oil and oil the bores. Install heads.

For a bare block back from the machine shop:

Scrub with hot soapy water and a brush.

Rinse with hose.

Dry with lint free towel.

Oil bore.

Cover engine until assembly
