Dale Reker (Hobart Dale Reeker) went to the Chrysler Institute along with Tom Hoover back in the 1950's and later worked with Tim Hoover and Dick Maxwell when they were involved in the 1960's putting together the various Stock and Super Stock programs. Does anyone have his latest contact information? I'm involved in the restoration of a well known race car from the era and am looking for info on the car. Mr. Reeker was the person who originally allocated the car to the driver/owner.

Not sure if there will be a side by side comparison of the two cars.

side note, also have plenty of camera's but was hoping to pick up a nice new one. One with more buttons and nice features but we will see if the wife will okay the $$$$ for the big price tag. According to Gene though I already have a nice camera but its getting old.

nascarxx29

Pictures still can be presented portraying side by side comparision of the 2 cars and their engineering timelines VS/ certain details aspects.. To be compared to what we know and see on a typical production daytona.  To say even if the cars are in 2 different states or countries if thats the case

Yes the camera is getting old. Nearing in on 6 years old now. Pretty old for a digital camera. Still takes great pictures though, but a nice new Nikon D700 would just be very nice.

69_500

Dave the two cars are actually in different countries from each other. One in USA other in Canada.

69_500

OH and before I'd post any pictures side by side comparing the two, I'd have to get permission from both owners to do so. Don't know if the one owner would go for that.

:shruggy:  :Twocents:I dont see that is a problem .When the vins are already outhere. And locations and owners remain anonymous and no other info is disclosed .In what are just pictures when it comes down to it.Or will this follow along the line as the exclusive photo shoot Frank Badalson did on the Dressler Daytona.Where you have the option to purchase said photographs

I don't have any problems showing pics of any good details on any car if it helps the hobby..... The only little problem I have at the moment is that I promised a magazine buddy first crack at the story and unique stuff. I know he wont mind if a few pics sneak out
He isn't coming till the spring - when all our igloo's melt and the permafrost subsides  :icon_smile_big: I'll ask him - I think he will be ok with it. After that I can post 1000's of pics but strictly adhering to the " Maximum attachment size allowed: 200 KB, per post: 4 " rule.  :2thumbs:

nascarxx29

Magazine commitants are common place and expected on antique automobiles and their unique details :yesnod:.And thats more than fair and generous on your part :2thumbs:.As your also wanting to help the hobby :2thumbs: .So we will have to wait and see if the other cars party is as generous and steps up :popcrn: .As we dont know if their in a similar magazine/ exclusive commitant situation or not

No, the radiator yoke numbers (and the trunk lip stamping, for that matter) stayed the same - but they never referred to XX29 anyway.  That was all done at Hamtramck.  There is a question in my mind whether Hamtramck or Creative Industries applied the VIN label on the driver's door edge.  I'm thinking that C.I. did it, but have not found any paperwork to back that notion up just yet.

Incidentally, Danny has noticed over the years that it seems the XX29 cars, both C500 and Daytonas, had their trunk lip stamping done farther down the trunk lip (closer to the tailpanel) than a lot of other cars.  We were guessing that perhaps this was done so that the ID stamping wasn't removed when they did the modifications for the rear window plug.  Yet something else to look for, although that's a hard detail to check.

Oh, and Danny's old camera makes mine look like a toy - and although I've seen his camera up close, it doesn't appear to have a rope pull start on it anywhere.  Looks pretty modern to me.  Having a toy camera does come in handy in tight spaces though   :poke:

As long as it does not involve flash powder we should be in good shape  :D

If they stamped the correct #'s.  One of my chargers XP29F9B421282 shows that # on the dash, f-tag and sheet but the yoke and trunk show 421182.

Very true, but that's more of a mistake than a change.  Barry Washington's site has some pretty interesting examples of factory mistakes.   :o

So we have 2 distinctive daytonas of importance and both SE's with different options.Jim pictures are promised and forth coming and has no reservations and can present his daytona is legit and share its origins. And wants to help the hobby in anyway. So were assured to see atleast one side of the story. All I can say is Les must have had some good contacts to have got the last daytona. And the mystery superbird or that would be quite a coincedence randomly.I met him on occasion way back and bought parts from him.Nice guy.Found on another post picture of the orig F6 RT/SE 4 speed build date 207 Dale Reeker car .When it was les Bowmans car who changed it to R4 red.Saw on a related to this car post about fenders reworked?? picture below doesnt show evidence thats detectible.
Quote from: hemigeno on January 08, 2009, 11:20:54 AM
To further muddy the waters, 287970's original fenders (which are still with the car) had the indentation where the '70 Charger marker lights would have gone, but it did not appear that the actual hole was ever cut out.  If the hole was cut out, it had a flawless patch done.  If/when the paint is removed from that fender, you'd be able to see whether the hole was patched up or not - but the bumpout is definitely visible looking from inside the fenderwell. And another related to this car. Yep, with only one exception.  287970 (Dale Reeker's executive car) has a Feb 7 build date.  I have my [[suspicions that this car wasn't originally built as a Daytona,]] but was selected to receive the conversion at a later date - no wonder, considering Mr. Reeker's involvement in the development of the Charger Daytona.  He's the one who changed the name from the "SuperCharger" to the "Charger Daytona" name.  The gentleman that owns this car now has been somewhat secretive with the car's information.  I would wonder if the car has Y39 on the fender tag like all the other Daytonas do.  Also, the SO numbers all begin with 926 or 927, again with the glaring exception of the Reeker car - which has an SO of 236200.  Re: Stripe Delete Daytona Question

I haven't ever seen any Daytona's that have evidence of having the R/T badges origionally on them. The only one I can think of that might be that way is the Dale Reeker Daytona, the one that doesn't fit anywhere in the list of VIN's, that is built in February,

I changed my rusticated to pieces doors on my convertible.  Nice rust free doors we had stored in my family since 1976.  We actually cut the vin decals out with plenty of sheet metal and welded them into the new replacement doors .

Les didn't use any of his contacts at Chrysler if he had 'em - the car was purchased off a Used Car Lot in the early/mid '70s with a smashed nose.  The original nose, which may or may not have contained some of the unique characteristics found on maxwellwedge's latest acquisition, was removed and replaced with a NOS nosecone by Les Bowman circa 1974-5.  The smashed-up nose was later sold to someone else, perhaps through one of the clubs?  I don't remember what John R. said about that...  Another name that has been associated with the car prior to Les' ownership is Bobby Rupp, although I have not been able to find out anything about his ownership other than hearsay.

Even though 287970 is listed as the last Daytona on the Shipping List, there are a number of unique things about the car that actually point to its status as a pre-production or prototype car -- the FIRST Daytona rather than the LAST.  There's a very high degree of probability that it was used to mock-up and test fit the nosecone, as no other Daytona chassis was in existence on March 31, 1969 when a dated photo was taken of a car in the middle of that process.  The same non-cut-out '70 marker hole indentations are present on the car in that photo, and are still in existence on 287970's fenders.  The car in the photo also had full wheelcovers, which were standard on an SE - and 287970 was an SE.  It'd be an almost undeniable connection if the photos showed SE emblems, or happend to be in color showing F6 green, but we're not that lucky.  I still think it's almost certainly the case.

There is nothing that says each Daytona was indeed fitted with a door VIN decal - at least that I've found.  Some cars definitely had them, some didn't for whatever reason.  If everyone had shot up a couple dozen rolls of film of their car before driving it home from the dealership, we'd have a lot less to talk about 'round here...

:P
