The dump (or waste transfer station - as they call it now) where I live actually has a shop where you can go in and buy things that other people have dumped. I got my welder from there for $25. The amount of copper in it alone is worth more than $25. Its about 40 years old and instead of any controlls just has taps in the front - starting at 35A and going up to 185A. Sadly its only single phase, so if I run it at anything over 100A it starts melting the plastic on the wall socket its plugged into.

Still - for $25 its awesome. I use it regularly.

You aren't the first person that has said that to me.  
They looked new so I brought them home and soaked them for a while and then washed them twice.  I don't see a problem with it actually.  

Do you ever go out to eat?  Do you think you are the only one that has eaten off that plate..... and what about the silverware and glasses you drink out of.  Are you sure the dishwasher is doing his/her job and making sure the dinnerware is sanitary?

Watch the movie "Waiting" you'll never go out to eat again.

One suggestion for sure though, don't ever drink from the glass without a straw.

By the way, I don't eat at restaurants any more.  Mostly high school kids doing everything.  How clean do you think they really are.  I'm very clean when I cook to the point I wear gloves when making certain things that I have to touch.  Ok, off on a tangent.

got a sweet sony 5CD changer/tape deck/tuner/switcher combo @ the dump that i fixed and is now in my room, i also picked up a legendary, super sounding Marantz amp @ the dump...works w perfection, missing one knob, who cares...yup...cool place man...

I actually worked as a garbage collector for several years until my back couldn't take it anymore. When i saw that Spider-Man movie where spider man quits and drops his costume on an alley garbage can. A garbage man finds it and brings it to the Daily Bugle. Jamison offers him something like a $100.00 for it. The garbage collector replies "I can get more for it on eBay." I got a pretty good laff out of that  If people only new.

When the garbage company I worked for was a small mom and pop operation the driver's had salvage wrights. So anything we wanted we could take. You name it, it winds up in the trash. Many time's people toss stuff, out of pure ignorance. I have pulled 35mm cameras out of people's cans (with lenses) and all that was wrong with them was a dead battery.

Another example, I pulled the lid off a can and inside was a Husqvarna electric chain saw with its paper work. I thought what the heck, threw it in the side basket of the truck and took it home after work. Plugged it in and pulled the trigger, it acted like it wanted to run but the chain wouldn't move. A closer examination revealed the safety brake was set. Released it, and it spun freely. Tried to cut some wood with it and about all it would do is burn the wood. Looked at it closer and discovered the chain was installed backwards  There was nothing wrong with it.

After my first year I found myself starting to bring some of the shit back to work  . I mean really, how many vacum cleaners do you really need, wouldn't it be cheaper to change the bag instead of throwing it out and going to Wal-Mart and buying a new one  ?

Speaking of Wal-Mart you would be amazed at what the retailer's throw out. I've seen stuff go to the land fill, and all that would be wrong with it is damaged packageing.

After the company was sold to Waste Connections, scavenging was no longer allowed.

I've found some sweet promos (I'm a sci-fi collector) at some of the big box places. A lady at Wal-Mart gave me two nice big Star Wars display signs that are in perfect shape - she saw I was looking at figures and just asked if I wanted them. I also got a great Star Wars DVD rack from a bookstore that was just going to be thrown out.
I don't collect much anymore, but I do still have the more unique pieces. The coolest thing about collecting is that often the neatest stuff costs little or nothing - you just have to be there when it gets tossed.

I've done my fair share of dump diving. My dad use to work at a landfill and he told about how cabelas brought new stuff in and dumped it what a waste

I've done a lot, and still do it. My oldest son found a fully working am/fm stereo cd plaer stereo that he still uses. I've found a usable working tv, mag wheels, good music cds, paints, computer stuff, lamps, a lawn mower, automotive shop manuals, and a lot more stuff.

 A scrap Iron collector on my old route brought out a box of carburetor's one day, said he didn't know much about them. This was in that box. Ive probably been sitting on this for 8 years and just looked up the numbers a couple of weeks ago. It's an 830 cfm double pumper....

I used to because at a lot of my jobs there are dumpsters.  I found a working Honda generator, a real 1960's Beatles record player and boxes of old Baseball cards.  Today a lot of places have locks on them anyway.
Oh, and box's and box's of porno tapes.  Don't ask, I passed them out to my friends.   Is this a family site?

Transfer station is picked pretty clean today.  Scored these albums and 2 boxes of commercial grade tiles(about 75 tiles) that will go nicely in my basement.(they are mostly white with a wisp of blue) Going to buy 2 boxes of black tiles and bickety bam, I got me a checkerboard floor for my little tattoo studio I'm making down there.

The album covers are a little water damaged but the records themselves look to be ok.  Wish I had a phonograph, I'd be checking out that JFK one.  I bet it says some cool stuff when you play it backwards. "My brother and I took turns going out with Marilyn Monroe and then we had her killed"  You know, stuff like that.

I used to live near the dump when I was a kid and I was over there all the time picking through it. I don't recall finding anything worth a whole lot though because I lived in a small community and everyone was so broke they barely had a pot to piss in. But it made for a fun place to goof around, and it didn't stop me from bringing junk home.

These days you can't scavenge like you used to, at least not where I live now. Bunch of recycle Nazis running the show.

Most of us around these parts of Maine are pretty financially challenged as well.  In and around my town, all the transfer stations have little outlets to put stuff in for anyone to shop.  The town next to me has a bus that you can go in and browse.  My transfer station has a little building, and so forth.  There are even clothes but mostly books, coffee mugs, ski stuff,  but sometimes you find some really cool old stuff.

Picked up about 15 picture frames today, they will come in handy cause I'm on a rearranging/picture kick.  A few VHS movies, Miss Congeniality, Bill and Ted's, Indiana Jones; Last Crusade, Needful Things to name a few.

most likely not : but if those tiles are 9"x9" they are asbestos . chances are they arent but you never know . but it is possible that sombody did have the alying around for the last 30 years .
