Scored 6 new dinner plates, an RCA stereo that everything works on and included a brand new AKON CD that was stuck in the carousel.  Two boxes of cassette tapes with some Duke Ellington, Cab, Elton John, Iron Butterfly, other rock stuff, lots of classical, and a Lawrence Welk. :2thumbs:
Couple heavy duty paint buckets with lids(great to store 8-3/4 pigs in)
I quit right there but I could have had some track lights as well(good for the basement)
It had been a long time since I went to the dump cause I used to just throw my trash in the dumpster at the body shop.
Forgot how fun it was to pick through other peoples unwanted stuff.
I'm headed back tomorrow at some point because there was a nice antique looking pitcher in one of them dry sink bowl looking things. Looked real old but most likely not.  I'll have to check it out and it's a good chance to bring some stuff of mine that other people might find of interest.

So come on, out with it.  What good stuff have you found at the local transfer station?

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

You aren't the first person that has said that to me.
They looked new so I brought them home and soaked them for a while and then washed them twice.  I don't see a problem with it actually.

Do you ever go out to eat?  Do you think you are the only one that has eaten off that plate..... and what about the silverware and glasses you drink out of.  Are you sure the dishwasher is doing his/her job and making sure the dinnerware is sanitary?

Watch the movie "Waiting" you'll never go out to eat again.

One suggestion for sure though, don't ever drink from the glass without a straw.

By the way, I don't eat at restaurants any more.  Mostly high school kids doing everything.  How clean do you think they really are.  I'm very clean when I cook to the point I wear gloves when making certain things that I have to touch.  Ok, off on a tangent.

I found one of those old Magnavox TV cabinets, the kind that had the 45 player up top, speakers on the ends and the sliding doors over where the TV was. I took it home, repainted it, kicked out the speaker panels and put in glass and lights. Made a nice little display and storage cabinet for my models. I'm refinishing it yet again to put in my guest bedroom, possibly to do its original duty but with a flat screen tv on the wall above it and the DVD player and speakers inside.

I went to a dump near my parents place...and there was a box sitting on the edge of the excavation.
In it was a whole pile of MINT car brochures from 1930-1965.
Not to mention a complete set of vintage Canadian Tire catalogs from the 1930's and 40's.
I sold the catalogs to a collector for $300.

I figure some old guy must have passed away, and the (stupid) relatives cleaned out his attic.

I have found two skateboards, a stack of car magazines, a large stack of hunting magazines.  A compressor that needed one little part.
That's about it.  I would have taken those plates also, but for shooting practice!!

I passed by a junkyard last week that had a Crown Vic that looked practically new, body-wise. I may go back next weekend to pull a few parts if I can.

as far as eating out. I always order beer in a bottle! :D this way if the food or plate the food was on wasn't clean..the beer will cure it.
PS. My first job was at McDonald's, they would always make you wash your hands before starting your shift on the grill. We you know how "auto grease" stains your hands :yesnod: well by the end of the shift...no more grease stains  :icon_smile_big: pickle juice, cleans it Right off. now you know why those burgers tasted sooooo goood!

The local dump watchs people to prevent theft of their stuff.   Guess there is a big market for trash in our area (rural Kansas).  Trust me, if it ends up in there, it is either broken or was not worth having in the first place.  Now, when I was in Columbia, Mo., that was a different story.  Alot of the college students would literally dump half of their stuff out when moving to different apartments.  I found so much stuff that way, I literally had to stop looking as I ran out of storage room.  I found two Atari 2600s, a Atari 5200, an Intelevision consule, and about 100 games for them (some still in the original wrappers) one day while walking back to my truck.  (This dates me, but I still have my original Atari 2600 that I paid $280 + tax for way back then.)  The systems and games were in two milk crates sitting by the side of the road on top of the trash bags, free for the picking.  :2thumbs:.........

The dump (or waste transfer station - as they call it now) where I live actually has a shop where you can go in and buy things that other people have dumped. I got my welder from there for $25. The amount of copper in it alone is worth more than $25. Its about 40 years old and instead of any controlls just has taps in the front - starting at 35A and going up to 185A. Sadly its only single phase, so if I run it at anything over 100A it starts melting the plastic on the wall socket its plugged into.

Still - for $25 its awesome. I use it regularly.

I actually worked as a garbage collector for several years until my back couldn't take it anymore. When i saw that Spider-Man movie where spider man quits and drops his costume on an alley garbage can. A garbage man finds it and brings it to the Daily Bugle. Jamison offers him something like a $100.00 for it. The garbage collector replies "I can get more for it on eBay." I got a pretty good laff out of that  If people only new.

When the garbage company I worked for was a small mom and pop operation the driver's had salvage wrights. So anything we wanted we could take. You name it, it winds up in the trash. Many time's people toss stuff, out of pure ignorance. I have pulled 35mm cameras out of people's cans (with lenses) and all that was wrong with them was a dead battery.

Another example, I pulled the lid off a can and inside was a Husqvarna electric chain saw with its paper work. I thought what the heck, threw it in the side basket of the truck and took it home after work. Plugged it in and pulled the trigger, it acted like it wanted to run but the chain wouldn't move. A closer examination revealed the safety brake was set. Released it, and it spun freely. Tried to cut some wood with it and about all it would do is burn the wood. Looked at it closer and discovered the chain was installed backwards  There was nothing wrong with it.

After my first year I found myself starting to bring some of the shit back to work . I mean really, how many vacum cleaners do you really need, wouldn't it be cheaper to change the bag instead of throwing it out and going to Wal-Mart and buying a new one  :shruggy:?

Speaking of Wal-Mart you would be amazed at what the retailer's throw out. I've seen stuff go to the land fill, and all that would be wrong with it is damaged packageing.

After the company was sold to Waste Connections, scavenging was no longer allowed.

I've found some sweet promos (I'm a sci-fi collector) at some of the big box places. A lady at Wal-Mart gave me two nice big Star Wars display signs that are in perfect shape - she saw I was looking at figures and just asked if I wanted them. I also got a great Star Wars DVD rack from a bookstore that was just going to be thrown out.
I don't collect much anymore, but I do still have the more unique pieces. The coolest thing about collecting is that often the neatest stuff costs little or nothing - you just have to be there when it gets tossed.  ;D

I used to because at a lot of my jobs there are dumpsters.  I found a working Honda generator, a real 1960's Beatles record player and boxes of old Baseball cards.  Today a lot of places have locks on them anyway.
Oh, and box's and box's of porno tapes.  Don't ask, I passed them out to my friends. :icon_smile_big:  Is this a family site? :eek2:

Transfer station is picked pretty clean today.  Scored these albums and 2 boxes of commercial grade tiles(about 75 tiles) that will go nicely in my basement.(they are mostly white with a wisp of blue) Going to buy 2 boxes of black tiles and bickety bam, I got me a checkerboard floor for my little tattoo studio I'm making down there. :2thumbs:

The album covers are a little water damaged but the records themselves look to be ok.  Wish I had a phonograph, I'd be checking out that JFK one.  I bet it says some cool stuff when you play it backwards. "My brother and I took turns going out with Marilyn Monroe and then we had her killed"  You know, stuff like that.

I used to live near the dump when I was a kid and I was over there all the time picking through it. I don't recall finding anything worth a whole lot though because I lived in a small community and everyone was so broke they barely had a pot to piss in. But it made for a fun place to goof around, and it didn't stop me from bringing junk home.

These days you can't scavenge like you used to, at least not where I live now. Bunch of recycle Nazis running the show.

Most of us around these parts of Maine are pretty financially challenged as well.  In and around my town, all the transfer stations have little outlets to put stuff in for anyone to shop.  The town next to me has a bus that you can go in and browse.  My transfer station has a little building, and so forth.  There are even clothes but mostly books, coffee mugs, ski stuff,  but sometimes you find some really cool old stuff.

The album covers are a little water damaged but the records themselves look to be ok.  Wish I had a phonograph, I'd be checking out that JFK one.  I bet it says some cool stuff when you play it backwards. "My brother and I took turns going out with Marilyn Monroe and then we had her killed"  You know, stuff like that.

most likely not : but if those tiles are 9"x9" they are asbestos . chances are they arent but you never know . but it is possible that sombody did have the alying around for the last 30 years .

Now you tell me. :slap:
The tiles were a Congoleum product and the boxes looked to be fairly newer. 12x12.  I'm sure i've had my fill of asbestos anyways from my navy days.  lead paint- check, asbestos-check, beryllium exposure-check and any other noxious gas/liquid/solid you can think of.  ....ohhh yes, I'm proud to be a coal miner's dau.......... :whistling:
Thanks for looking out though :2thumbs:
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Include me in there. While in the Army, the government housing areas where a trove of treasures. Families moving back to the states would toss anything new or old that they had kept until the last minute after there main housing shipments already went out. Germany had what they called Junk Day. It was picker heaven. You name it was set out for anyone to get.

We have a city operated recycle center.  I like to do metal art and it is a score for all that.  Last week I was there and someone dumped a chipper/grinder there.  It was identical to mine but had all the key parts.  It had been left outside for a couple of years and the tires were flat.

I took it home -- the thing is brand new.  I felt sorry for the person who originally bought it because it could never have run well.  The spark plug boot had the little metal thing way ajar -- it had to come that way from the factory.  The rest was in great shape.  So I cranked it up and now I have two 10hp chipper/shredders.  People just throw stuff away.  Kim

Great idea , but I would have to drive to NH or MA for that. :smilielol:

Picked up about 15 picture frames today, they will come in handy cause I'm on a rearranging/picture kick.  A few VHS movies, Miss Congeniality, Bill and Ted's, Indiana Jones; Last Crusade, Needful Things to name a few.

Hey remember those tiles I found. ;D

Tiles look great :2thumbs: it they were asbestos you would just keep wax on them anyway since installing and removing is when your at risk. We have to take an asbestos test every 3 years to keep up on new standards.

KAAATOWWWWWW!!!!

How's this score?
Have no idea the year, but this thing had everything in it.  Must have cost a fortune and it appears to have been used very little.  I played with it for a while myself.  Man, that is some serious magnification going on with these things.  Even the little light underneath works. :2thumbs:
I swear I saw some stuff moving around on the little glass thingies.

I felt like Grissom.

Geo,
That was funny on the plates. :smilielol:

Not so bad today up here.  The storm wasn't as bad as they said it was going to be.  My compound is pretty cleared out.  That Boss 9.2 V really can push some snow I tell ya.  I even plowed around the back of the house(the yard).  Never know when I'll need to stuff another car.
