383, 4 speed, 4.30's and 28 inch tall tires cruising at 50-55 mph i get around 12-13. cant complain while its turning 3k most of the time

Last car 383, 750 holley, auto 2500 stall,509 cam, 391 gears 28 tires, 9 on a good day ,when I played 6-7 mpg. But I built it for fun. Next car built for more fun 440 six pac ,4-speed ,410 dana even worse mpg. But I my muscle cars are not made for mpg they are made playing.

472 R/T SE

I just took a trip up to north Seattle with the 'cuda.  60-70 mph both ways & it was 14-15 mpg.  3:23 & 340, I think Larry said he got even better on some of his trips to Branson.

Milage?? Whats that?  My guage doesnt work, so i fill it up every 100 miles, with 28 in tires and a 2.94 rear i usually end up putting 10 or 12 gallons in, so, a pretty consistant 10 mpg, depending how much i drive on the freeway.

Might be  :icon_smile_big:

But I'm not really that heavy, although there is a lot of short distance driving.

I think you're just about right.  My 440, stock rebuild, 727, 3:23 sure grip, is getting 10~11 on the first two tanks of gas.

Go to www.fuelly.com & see my '69 there....
currently in first place out of all the '69s (because I'm the only one so far....not for long I can guess ;) )

I am currently in last place out of all the '08s :(
My lack of highway driving kills mileage as you can see....plus the fact that I dont keep my foot out of it :drive:

I'm getting 9mpg in my '69 R/T, too.  440, 727, 3.23, heavy foot.

FLG

400, 727, 2.9ish gears (not exactly sure, its a dog off the line is all i know  :eek2: )

If i dont nail it i can get 18ish mpg on the highway.

mjwebb

I get a solid 2gpm..actually, the real answer is 'who cares?'

Wicked72

Im building a 512... so I would say GPM when its done  :2thumbs:

my 69 bone stock 318 904 with 2.76 gears gets 21 mpg hand calculated on the freeway.  wanted a 440 but hell i can afford to drive this lol

Kern Dog

Mine got around 5 with the 493, 727 and 4.10 gears. Thats not good.
Now I have a GV and 3.91 gears. I'm hoping to break into double digits. The 850 carb and '509 cam are not for the fuel sipping crowd!

Cooter

On open  road, pretty good. Round town, kinda sucks..Spirited driving, really sucks...

About 11 mpg on the freeway but that includes passing just about everyone and having at least the vent window open as the wind noise is more severe with everything shut so that can't help mileage much.  In town it all depends, when I do a weekend cruise I can still average 10 mpg but driving to work and back it's more like 7 - 8.

The eddy carb is out of tune and no crossover block boils the fuel out of the carb every time I shut it off.  Once the new valley pan is in and the TQ is back on, I'm hoping to improve these numbers a bit.

with the current '69, which has bad tires and a bad carb, about 16-18 mpg so far.. 318 2 barrel, 727, 2.76.

I care. Restored stock and I get a whole 8 mpg and yes it bugs me knowing today's cars get 40/50.
How can I not care?  I have a family of 5 with lots of bills and everytime I use my Charger it cost me a lot of cash to drive.  I love the car but I wish I got better mpg.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Good ole' 318!  So how's the driving experience compared to a big block?  I would love to be in the 20 range.

:iagree: Gas is not going to EVER get any cheaper. "Cost of living" pay increases are never what the actual cost of living is.  So in order for me to use and enjoy my car I either have to keep it running well and get the best milage I can or keep it in a garage and invite folks to come over and see it.  I prefer the driving and enjoying option.
A couple years ago a former Chrysler member (one of the Ram racing guys, I forget his name at present) was at Moparfest.  He made some very good points regarding engines and running your classic.  Things will NEVER be the way they were in the 60's. Gas will never be the quality it was back then. Get used to it and do what you can to keep things running as best you can.  I know I'll never get the 30-plus I get with my Stratus or Sebring, but I am lucky in a way, I get 17-18 on the highway with my 383 4bbl.
I don't race it, some folks do, that is fine. Enjoy it any way you wish.
But the more my wife and I can afford to drive our Charger(s) the more I can enjoy my summers until I pass and my kids can enjoy them.    :2thumbs:

Let's see, stock 440 HP2 (w/4428S carb and factory dual-point), stock 18-spline 4-gear, stock Dana 60 w/3.54:1, stock H-pipe exhaust system, and stock 14-inch Magnum 500s has always been a pretty consistant 8-mpg.  I suppose if I crept everywhere and never opened the secondaries it might do better. Never tried that. I would guess the range would be about 5-6 mpg when hitting it hard and maybe 10-12 mpg when coasting down a series of hills?  Simple math here: if you can't afford the gasoline you can't afford to drive the car.  That's never going to change....keep that in mind when you vote this November.

1969chargerrtse

Many of us can afford the gas but 8 mpg at 4.00 per gallon sucks not matter how you look at it. It is what it is.

And I was so happy when I pulled into a gas station last weekend and saw premium 93 oct was only $3.71.  Sad isn't it.

It's a brave new world out there now! My first purchase of gasoline for a personal vehicle (a Honda 90, in ~1973) cost me $0.22 per gallon.  For a mere quarter I could fill it up and go all week.  These cars were built in that time frame and reflect a particular disdain for fuel economy.  You can try to make a 60s era musclecar more "green", but you're completely missing the point of owning one if you do so.  "Peak oil" is a theory that gets kicked around alot these days, with both it's proponents and it's detractors, and while I'm impressed with all of the progress that's been made with horizontal drilling, I'm confident that you will never see gasoline go much under $3/gallon again in this country.  Federal and State taxes, and all sorts of other "political interests" will make sure that $4 per gallon is probably the "new normal" going forward, and we can only hope that that's as bad as it gets.
