8 bolt crank and 6 bolt flywheel - question for the gurus

Hey everyone,

I'm at the stage where I am just about ready to drop a 440 into my 69 RT resto project.

I just realized that my 440 has an 8 bolt crank and the flywheel is 6 bolt.  I've been converting my restoration project from a 727 to a 4 speed.  I purchased a rebuilt 440 from a guy and now that I have it home I realize that the crank won't match up to the flywheel.

So my question is why this has an 8 bolt crank?  I am guessing it may be a hemi crank installed in the 440.

But if so, can I simply find another flywheel and will that work with everything else or do I need to find another transmission??

Thank you all in advance.

A lot of the aftermarket cranks are 8 bolt.  I'm pretty sure all you need to do is get the proper flywheel to match it all up but one of the interchange experts willknow for sure.

Did you buy the flywheel new?  If so, you may be able to exchange it for the 6 bolt variety.  I ran into this problem and had bought the flywheel at Summit.  They usually charge a 20% restocking fee if it has been a long time.  In my case, I had bought so many $$ in parts from them that they only charged me 10% restocking fee.  And didn't charge me for shipping out the new one.  All in all, I was pretty pleased that they would do this as it had been almost a year since I had bought the flywheel.  Now if you got it from 440 Source, say, I doubt they would exchange.  But their price is so low that you wouldn't be out all that much and could probably sell the flywheel you don't need and recoup part of the money.  If it's used, then you will probably just need to sell it and buy the correct one.

Just get a new flywheel, and you will be fine  Make sure your clutch assembly will fit your new flywheel, or go with a flywheel/clutch package.
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!

Not sure if you have already bought the bell housing, clutch, etc.  If not, I would go with the 10-1/2 inch flywheel.  It's 130 tooth.  They went to these in 71 or so for everything.  You can get a reproduction bell from Brewers in aluminum at a pretty good price.  The flywheel will be cheaper too depending on where you get it.  Up to you as to whether you go with the 3 finger Borg and Beck style or the diaphram style clutch.  Also, you don't get the pressure plate to flywheel attaching bolts with the pressure plate.  I had to order them from Summit---made by ARP.  They have a shoulder on them that a regular bolt doesn't have.  The difference between the hemi 4-speed and the regular one is the number of splines on the input shaft.  The clutch has to match the number of splines.  23 spline for regular and 18 for hemi.  Some internal differences in the 18 spline to beef it up.  23 spline OK for most uses.  Crank has to be drilled for pilot bushing but since it is a 8 bolt, it probably already is.   440 Source had a pretty good deal on a 10-1/2 inch flywheel.  Not sure if it was SFI or not.
