Temp & Oil pressure sending units?

Mechanic asked me to get these parts for my 440 rebuild but I am not sure what they are and where to get them.  Any advice?

Do you have a picture of what these look like?

Ghoste

You can get them just about anywhere that sells auto parts.  The temp sending unit goes in the front of the block and looks like a cylinder about 1/2 inch diameter and 1 1/2 long.  The oi sender goes in the back of the block and looks kind of like a little two story igloo.  A tall domed affair about 3 inches long and 1 1/2 diameter.  Roughly.  Pics should be aplenty on the site though, just look at the various engine shots and you'll quickly pick them out.

thats a weird water temp sender location!!!.... mayeb because is an Hemi ??? ?

normally they are on upper alt bracket area. In fact the bracket has a hole on non A/C cars to get access to sender.

Yeah I should have stated the location being different instead of the "sending unit, but not correct" post.  But the 383, 440, 426 sender should be the same.  I didn't read it like he wanted a picture of the location.

I don't have any close up 440 water pump pictures but he should be able to get the idea for the unit.

Nacho-RT74

Oh Ok!

well I just have seen a similar location on an old 383, one of those with 4 bolts valve cover heads engines.

here is a couple of temp senders:

our one is like the one on the left BUT stud is threated

here is the one... is the same to all engines and years

same seller provides oil senders to gauges. Check the store and will save shipping IF you don't want to get from local dealer, but they should it be available locally

I just want to confirm, the Oil pressure gauge like the one in the picture is correct for a 68 charger with a 440?  I went to Napa and they asked if it was oil pressure or oil light...?  Or, do I need both?

Nacho-RT74

oil sender with bulb shape on first pic is to pressure gauge to all years. Idiot lights use a smaller unit. Be sure to get the propper scale one, what I think is 80 psi

The larger canister-type gauge senders come in two versions, 80 psi and 100 psi.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Chatt69chgr

Which was correct for a 69 Charger?  80 or 100 psi?  Are they marked to differentiate between the two?

grdprx

So, do I need a smaller one for the idiot light?

y3chargerrt

80 PSI unit is correct for a 69 Charger.

John_Kunkel

The unit in the e-bay link above appears to be 1/4" pipe thread, the factory ones are 1/8" pipe thread. Some blocks have provisions for both sizes, others not.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Nacho-RT74

well yes, maybe, :shruggy: but just trying to show more less how should it be the idiot light kind

Would a 100 psi unit work?  That's all napa carries...

grdprx

Nacho-RT74

I think if you get a 100 PSI unit, only cahnge you will get is the TOP of the scale will be 100 PSI :shruggy: then all the scale reading would it be different.

but hey, why NAPA ? why not try another dealer ?
maybe teh clkoser Mopar delaer aroudn still ahve them available!

or simply get it from the firts link provided ( quicksilver at ebay )

doesn't say if 100 or 80 psi

Rockautoparts have them form $7.52 to $14.53... Standard, Airtex, ACdelco

Good point, thanks Nacho.  I e-mailed rockauto to see if they knew which psi it was...  Also gunna check with the local dodge dealer.

Winged 1

 ;)
Be forwarned.
Your right about NAPA only carrying the 100 psi. I had them call and the distributor says 100 will work.
Till you get home and find out the stem is to long and will not go where it needs to go. Be sure to take the old one with you where ever you end up purchasing one and double check the length.
Best of luck,
Eric

  I went by Oreilly's after work to check the PSI, it was 100 too.  But, they had a unit for 82-90 Chrysler that was the correct thread diameter that was 80 psi; would that work?  It has a stud like the temp unit.

Found the link at Napa...

:shruggy:

Corellian Corvette

This is great information! Let's see if we can find the correct unit; gosh how many of us are getting incorrect readings at the guage because of this!?

Corellian Corvette

Looks like this guy has one of the correct 80psi units left (I got one)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280084930040&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=

Also I did some math - assuming the guage works relative to the PSI of the can (so it takes 100psi to max the guage vs. 80psi to max the guage), your oil pressure readings could be WAY off

Guage reads
0   20   40   60   80

Actual PSI
0   25   50   75   100

That means if you're car is running 60 psi, it's going to read just over 40 on the guage!

grdprx

Your right, I got the one off E-bay.  I'm being cheap, but then I remembered I paid about 3k so far in engine stuff; so I really should get the right one.   :D
