Hi,

Does anyone know of an inexpensive set of headers that will fit a 73 charger 440 without any tweaking? I don't want to have to dimple anywhere and don't want them dragging on the ground, the car is LOW. Also how about any installation tips?

Thanks!!

Inexpensive headers that fit great. That's what I want for Christmas. Only Chevy owners get that combo.

TTI makes different headers for b and rb engines just so they fit . Most of the budget headers fit 361-440, b body 67-74 so they end up compromising.

Most install from under car. A lift is great or the tallest jackstands you can get. Jack engine of its mounts ,sometimes very far off its mounts (watch

cooling fan)

You might have to remove studs from heads which can cause coolant leaks. Use sealant on header bolts.

IF column shift ,linkage might interfere.

I used Hooker comps and beat them into submission.

Ok,

We had a "touchdown" of the lunar module knows as a 440 in the car today ;) After wiggling, hitting, poking the motor went in. Here is the problem,, well maybe. The steering linkage, you know that square looking grease filed whosiafats that is in the steering shaft just before the rubber coupling that connects it to the steering box.. well its "lightly" hitting one of the 1 7/8 header tubes. Is there a better attachment that I can use there that doesn't have that square thingy?

Secondly, one tube is "slightly touching the steering box and another is a 1/2" away. I don't want to dimple the headers as they are tuned headers but I may. How close is to close on the starring box? Id imagine the air flow around the box would be enough to keep it sorta cool.

Bob, you might be able to shim up the motor mounts for increased clearance....that's one option.  :scratchchin:

Might be able to shim up one side slightly as to twist the header away from things,, lemme go look,,, pictures coming.

Naw these are spool mounts, but anyway,, with the sterring colum bolted in it clears the back tube ok now. Just a clearance issue on the PS. Ive got a 1/2" on two tubes,, guess thats enough.

Most headers have some dimpling from the factory to clear attachment bolts or plugs. Adding a few well made dimples won't break the horsepower bank.

I heat the the tube and use a large diameter, usually a 3/4 inch drive socket and a hammer to make the impression.

Hey,

The headers are in and clear but the collection tubes make this thing LOW. These are hooker headers and the collection tubes slide on and off the primaries. There 3 1/2" so even if I try and bend them into the area of the tranny brace where the exhaust is supposed to run they are LOW. These collectors are very long, like 20 + inches.

They are supposed to be tunned headers as well. Seeing that I have to reduce the size to 2  1/2  anyway for my mufflers,, whatcha think about me cutting these collection tubes off just past where it goes from oval to round and running my 2 1/2" from there. This way I could also route the pipes through the tunnel in the tranny cross member as I assume they were originally. How much if any performance loss might I expect? This would give me clearance Clarance  :hah:

what about those "flat" exhaust pipes that came out a few years back?
Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

Heres a pic,, please excuse the mess. Its mostly undercoating but we have not yet been able to steam clean the underside.

Not sure what to do about this. The headers flex pretty good and I might be able to tweak them over. Its not my most desirable outcome. At this rate were lucky if we have 6" of clearance.

Ok I tweaked them over. I still may have to cut one side in a slight v and bend the collectors up as close to the cross member as possible and weld the v back as they wont stay hyper extended as I would like. The will end up about as low as my 727 deep pan so I think that will do.  BTW,, that new chrome 727 pan DOES NOT HAVE grease on it,, its actually dew and the camera reflection made it look like grease.  :shruggy: Once the car is running I plan of finding a way to power wash, steam clean the underside,,, need a donar lift I think. the top side  is looking good  :2thumbs:
