Hi guys,

Does anyone know of somewhere i could get a bearing for the crankshaft of my RV2 compressor ? I have emailed Classic Auto Air and awaiting a reply, but thought someone here might know of somewhere else to try in the meantime.

I must admit, I thought getting bits for my compressor would be a lot easier than it has been, and it seems there's not many folk out there that know all that much about them.

;)

haven't replaced yet mine since noise stop, but looking for get it soon

I guess it' is possible to match the bearing somewhere, but in front of the bearing there's some rubber seals whcih must come as part of a package. Surely there's places over there that make the package ? They were common enough on Mopars.

It really surprises me how difficult it's been getting info on A/C. Almost all the info I've read is based on a Mopar Muscle article on the net and there seems to be no-one out there - other than Classic Auto Air - that has anything to do with A/C systems.

I think you will eventually find the bearing seal set from someone since it fit a lot of Mopar products and I am pretty sure that you can buy a rebuilt RV2 Compressor.  Did you try Old Air Systems in Ft. Worth, TX?

Once I looked into trying to get a bearing for a Japanese compressor.  I recall in the old days that you would simply go down to a place like Dixie Bearing and they would just use a micrometer to measure your bearing and go back and find one of the right type.  No more.  A lot of these AC Compressor bearings are not available from anyone but the manufacturer-----if they even have them or sell them.  Sad to say but the bearing business has really changed in the last 20 years.  But then, what hasn't.

I agree that it's very difficult to get any good info on the AC systems.  I've found more good info by surfing the net than about any other way.  It's almost like it's a black art and the practicioners of it don't want to divulge any info.

NAPA has the front bearing, their part number is BRG 6205J. They also show up on e-bay from time to time.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Nacho-RT74

front seal is the same than the regular/universal and tipical YORK compressor ( already replaced mine )

G'day again guys,

I really appreciate the replies. I actually bought myself a "rebuilt" old stock unit off Ebay. I was told that all the RV2 units were the same, so I figured it'd be good to use mine for any future parts and the rebuilt one could go in the car. The front bearing in mine had seized, but I didn't know that at the time.

Here in Australia, I was told that it would cost at least 4400 - $500 to rebuild my unit, IF they could locate whatever parts were required.

Well.....I got my rebuilt unit. It arrived after costing over $100 US just for postage......I thought I'd look inside it to see what it was like and.....NO PISTONS. That's right....it actually had a brand new front bearing but no pistons. It was an "old stock" unit and I harbour no ill feelings toward the people i got it off. It was lying around in a plaxce they owned and it was dirt cheap.

So....I decided to just switch my pistons over to this unit. Then I found the oil pump was cracked at the rear,........no problem....I used mine. I put the pistons in and tried to turn it. NO LUCK. It would turn if the bearing caps were loose, but when tightened it just didn't want to know.

So........I cleaned the body of mine up and put the pistons back in. I thought I'd transfer the new bearing from the Ebay unit into mine and I'd be right.

GUESS WHAT..............different bearing and front housing altogether. The "rebuilt" one had a larger type bearing and mine had a smaller type.  :brickwall:

I'm having a lot of fun by now. I decided to simply replace my bearing. Easy task you'd think - NOT. Oh....also forgot to mention that since getting the rebuilt unit the Aussie dollar has plummetted against the greenback. That means anything for sale in the U.S costs twice as much for me to buy....and then there's the postage costs.

Sorry for the whining, but thought you'd like to know where I'm coming from. :2thumbs:

Are you doing a numbers matching resto?  If not, why not just junk the old RV2 and put in a Sanden SD508 compressor.  You can get all the parts from Bouchillon Performance in South Carolina.  They have a nice website.

No, not numbers matching.......just trying to get the air back in so it looks right. I have thought about putting another compressor in, but the thought of making up new brackets and the like seems a pain.

I drive the car every now and then, and don't really use the air but I like to have things at least looking right and working the way they are meant to.

You got a bearing from an RV2 compressor, some parts don't interchange between the V2 and the RV2, front bearings and bearing housings are among them.

This is great - I'm learning something. So what's the difference between a V2 and an RV2 ? What cars were they used on or was it a matter of luck ?

See, when I was looking I was told they were all the same. All i needed was an RV2 unit and that was it. Now i find I must have a V2 unit.

I have no idea.....but I have seen there is a difference just browsing on the net - people refer to V2 and RV2.

Hopefully someone here can shed some light (info). As I mentioned earlier, there's not that many guru's when it comes to A/C.....not in my travels anyway.

Of course!!! everybody removes because "sacrifices performance": weight, traction, you name it! so nobody takes care knowing about A/C ...... :brickwall: yeah, sure, because you use your car to race everyday

Bummer... how many of us race he cars insted use on streets!!!! personally I like combine power and comfort!

If you like to burn tires ocasionally, will be able with A/C too.

G'day Nacho,

I agree. I hear all this talk of "power robbing A/C" but let's be honest, if you got risd of everything that robbed power and performance you just be left with an engine.

I should have documneted my "pulldown" of the compressors I have here. i have learnt a lot. I was really worried about pulling it all apart but now I can see just how they work and the differences between them. :yesnod:

Maybe I'll knock up a web page if I get some time so others aren't left in the lurch like me. :2thumbs:

Up until the seventies, only the C and Y bodies got the RV2; after that they were scattered around the various body/engine combos.

So how do i tell which one I have ?

Hang on.......I think one of them actually has "V2" stamped on it. I'm going to check...................... :scope:

OK.....on my old compressor, there's a number "2" stamped on top, but that's it. Mind you, the compressor "sump" off my old one shows a date code of 1969, whereas the one I got off Ebay actually has 1971 - the year of my Charger. Trouble is i can't use the Ebay one because i don't have pistons to go with it. :brickwall:

I am going to a local bearing shop today to see if they have the bearing I need to repair my compressor. If not, I know they are available from NAPA over your way.

Well.....I took the old bearing to the local bearing guys and they had a brand new replacement for $14 Aust. That's about $8 US.

How good is that. I also have a full gasket kit from a guy who goes by the name of TexasRick on Ebay - it's a good kit too.

Tomorrow I'm going to start rebuilding it all.

What's the number on the bearing?

The number on the old bearing is :

205 5

It also says USA and MRC

All my bits are ready to go. I've pressed the new bearing on and am just waiting to get some A/C compressor oil to lube everything up before putting it back together. Trouble is it costs around $50 for 1 litre. I'm waiting to see my A/C guy to see if he can spare some.
