Ghoste

Not me. :shruggy:  Where'd you turn it up at?

Looks kinda SASSY don't it? They are on Doctona and I really think they are original because they were masked around when the exterior of the car was re-painted by the previous owner. They sure look old where they terminate in the trunk jambs and the bottom of the quarters. I'll let my paint man investigate. Being early maybe they were still messing with the final stripe design?

69_500

Looks interesting. I wonder why only the one side of the car seems to be slanting though.

Jim,

Do the quarterpanel stripes have the same sheen on both sides?  I remember reading somewhere that the original stripes were not overly glossy.  Being such an early-converted car could easily have played a role.

It is definitely odd to have two different stripe letter layouts on the same car, but I'm sure you've seen harder things to believe than that on your original cars.

BTW, have you been able to check out some of the date codes to see if they indicate an earlier build date than the SPD?  I got to thinking that the Canadian cars' SPD of 6/10 (or at least all of them but one) could have been uniformly established like the A12 and 'Bird SPDs... Why they would do that for just Canadian cars, I dunno.

69_500

Could just be the angle of the picture or my eyes playing tricks on me, but is the passenger side decal closer to the rear of the car as well? And looks like the whole decal might be going at a slight angle as well. Gauging this off of how close it is to the corner extension vs. how the driver side is.

Did you find evidence of the curled up ends of original decal material .On the rear sidemarkers. They X cut the decal and shoved in the reflector sidemarker. My car that had the original cracking stripe showed this detail.

Good point - I have that on my 69-1/2's and on a Swinger....I'll have a close look in the trunk.

Hey Gene,
They appear to have the same low sheen.

It is weird to have the 2 different patterns but they both have been masked around the edges when Doc did a re-paint....He left the lettering alone though. His re-paint is almost a V2 instead of R4...except the letters which are still R4. I wonder if early over the counter stripes were goofy? I should send the pics to Patik for a look-see as well.

May be the camera angle - I'll measure it myself. I had some cars (bumble bee) that were not even close to even though.

maxwellwedge

OK - Mystery solved. Just spoke with Patik and he tells me the original factory stripes are exactly what I have. His first run (1976) were dead nuts to the originals but people did not want them with the goofy tilting letters so they "evolved" over the years. He can still make the original style if someone asked him to.

Go figure huh?

Ghoste

Wow, that's interesting.  There are a lot of strange things yet to be discovered about these cars.

hemigeno

Were both sides' "A"s supposed to be tilting at the exaggerated rake on your passenger side?  Some of the original pictures (e.g. from Creative Industries' storage lot and as the cars were loading on the car hauler, plus a few of the advertisement pictures that still remain) show a slight tilt on the "A"s, but not quite as much as what your passenger's side is.

Here is a picture of my car's right side which was, to my knowledge, untouched when the picture was taken.  It has a slight tilt to the A's...

maxwellwedge

OK Guys - Put away those blow-driers and heat guns.

I should have clarified my post - Had to do some "Honey-Do" stuff and was in a hurry. Mine was one style of original stripe. There were one or two others. NOS were different to all the original types.

Sorry to all those that are removing your stripes!  :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

FJMG

Are they actually tilting or is the right side of the "A" actually "plumb" (vertical)?  I looked at a B/W video (from 1970) of a car and there is a short segment taken of the drivers side decal, but it is taken from an angled position by the drivers door and it sort of looks tilted but I think it would be less noticable on the drivers side since the "A" is leaning in the same direction as the decal angle. On the pass. side the "A" leans opposite the decal angle.
Maybe UFO or hemigeno can chime in with a screencapture of that video segment.?

Wish I could, but my technology skills at screencapturing rival those of a rock.  I'll grab the DVD and give it a whirl next week if Brian doesn't come through for us...

OK, which style are we talking about - passenger's side or driver's side?  I would not characterize those as the same style, but I'm not much of an expert on such.  Like Robert/FJMG was pointing out, the right side of the "A" is close to being plumb on the passenger's side, but not even close on the driver's side.  On the passenger's side picture, the right side of the "A" has the same 'tilt' as the right side of the "N", but that is not the case on the driver's side.  If the right side of the "A" and "N" were aligned the same on both sides of the car, that would make some sense - but I don't think that's the case.
