Hello all,

Well I'm inexperienced about this but i do have a love for the Charger, thanks to mopar440_6.   I'm looking to purchase a Charger.   Could you all help me out with this?   Once again I'm inexperienced with this but have a newfound love. And I'm serious about it. Would really appreciate the help with what to look at.

Any specific year?  73-74, and 66-67 Chargers are still fairly cheap.

Welcome. What year are you looking for? The amount of money you have to spend will have a direct effect on what year and/or condition you end up getting. Me, I had to have a '68 which is one of the more sought after years so I ended up getting one that needs work because I didn't have a big bankroll. Since I bought it almost two years ago the thing is probably worth $3k more than I paid for it, even though I haven't done much of anything to it. That's all going to change here in a couple months though. Prices are still going up so don't goof around too long.

Right now i have 5k, which isn't much i know, but i was looking for something that i could fix up.  A project car. Always wanted the bragging rights of fixing up a Charger.  Umm, was looking at 3rd gen Chargers but the year doesn't really matter too much as with that amount of money I cant be too picky.

I think 5K would be a good starting point for a project, but for the money, try to find the most solid & complete car you can. I think the body work would be the most expensive, & also the easiest to miscalculate for what it will actually cost. A lot of times what looks very minor can be a never ending mess. Terms like "surface rust" or "needs only" or "easily repaired" or "good father & son project" will screw you beyond belief. The best thing you can do for yourself is to look at as many cars as you can, & don't be afraid that this can take months to do. It might even take longer, so be patient & don't rush into thinking the car your looking at will be the only one left for sale. Of course the seller might make it sound like he's doing you a favor by taking your money, but in most cases you'll be doing him a favor.

If you are serious about a project car.     My neighbor had/has one.   $3500 I think that is what he told me.   69 auto on floor,   Has all the parts but will need a lot of sheet metal work.

He is a good guy and I can always look at it, and or photo it for you if he still has it.

Seriously I'd recommend taking out a loan and geting 492's '68 even if it meant a debt for a couple years... it's only 20 and well worth it..

I agree 100%  Heck he is including the extra motor right?  Or do I mis-read the add.  Heck you are much better off buying that than a project car.  Trust me

Car price $5,000
Paint body work, $10,000 (minimum)
Motor and Tranny Easy $5,000

This is not including all the small things wheels tires, small parts needed, Interior redo, carpet, headliner.... ETC will be another $5,000 minimum when said and done.

BUY THE 68 R/T you will be happier in the long run.....

Inexperienced, hook up with a auto salvage/trucking service that pick's up donated vehicles for churches, etc... someone beat me to a running 1970 Challenger with a 340 and slap stick for $ 1,800, several weeks ago. Also what state are you in?

id check on ebay......thats where i got both of mine.....but be cautious annd do your research.....alot of crooks out there....everyone on this site is more than happy to help with info or whatever else you need.......welcome to the dodge team

If you would like, I know where a 73 charger, 440 SE is.  It is only 4,000 and is very solid from what I can see.  I will get some pictures if you are interested.  It is white with a black vinyl top and black interior.  The lady who owns it is the original owner, and it has been in her barn for about 6 years now.

Heck, I've owned my Charger for 6 yrs, spent 3 yrs restoring it, have been on this site for years now, and I'm still inexperienced compared to a lot of guys on here. Buying a Charger that has already been restored definitely has it's pros, but restoring one yourself feels sooooooo much better once you get it done! Either way, be prepared to spend!

Thanks for the great welcome.  The reason I only have 5K at the current time is because I'm putting myself through college, and the reason i would rather have a project car is not only for braging rights but for the fact that it wont hurt my bank account at first. I know its gonna cost an arm and a leg later, but thats all good with me. Also, i live in PA and im willing to drive.  I would appreciate any photos or info of cars anywhere really, but like i said only got 5k because of my circumstances.  Also would rather get started earlier with a project car and maybe have it done by the time im out of college than to wait 5 or 6 years till im out and start looking then.

Sounds like you got a good plan.  Just don't be like me, and concentrate soley on the car.  College should be the priority.  (I really should take my own advice, but, I'm too hard headed for that. )  Always nice to have another young gunner here.

Here is something to think about. At cruise night a few weeks ago I ran in to this guy who just got his 66 Plymouth back from restoration. He bought the car four years ago and sent it out to be restored. The car is absolutely stunning. Standing around shooting the bull like we always do he mentioned how much it cost him. He said that as it stands he has just over $50,000 in it. It is not a concourse restoration. It is highly modified to suit his taste.

I guess the moral of this is find a car that needs as little as possible even if you spend more than you wanted to. You will be money ahead in the long run.

My third gen has even gone up a few thousand since I bought it two years ago. But if I wanted it to be a daily driver fuel and maintenance costs would kill me.

I was the exact same person 10 years ago.  I was a sophmore in college and "had" to get my car done before i graduated.  So the rusty project that i bought took all of my 5 years of college to complete and when i was done i had missed out on all the fun stuff you're supposed to do in college,  IE: go on trips with your friends to the lake, or the beach or jump in the car with some guys and road trip to the mtns to go skiing for a weekend.  I passed on all this just to grind out rust on a junk car.  Now its 6 years later and i'll never get those days back but i can always go outside and grind on rust.  So i say save your 5 grand for fun stuff, then when you graduate and get a positive cash flow going buy a project car. 

And by the way,  dont get married with a mortgage and have kids right away, you'll never have time or money to work on a project Charger.
