I was watching my DVD and I have a 3 X zoom and freeze frame feature and saw that the 69 chager that limped into the walnut grove was NOT the same charger that hit the truck originally, but another charger that had simular intentional damage to resemble the 69. The charger that limped into the grove Also, there are NO back up lights in the lower valance under the rear bumper. I noticed also that during the end of the chase after the chopper landed, the charger takes a hard  right and 2 farm workers are loading their pick up truck & look at the car as it screams by, I froze that scene after i noticed something new on the charger & that was a 6 foot CB antennae on the right front fender that appears in that 1 scene only and the small CB antennae on the rear window is still on the car. The large antennae has a spring on the bottom and it is a stainless steel anntenae. When I bought my charger from the production companies  "available"car poole i found a few things in the trunk including a blue denim shirt with a grease stain on the left shoulder/arm,  sound equipment cable ends, a beat up area road map of stockton, farmington & hwy 99 areas maked in circles, and also in the trunk sticking through the side of the back seat into the rear passenger area was a stainless steel 6 foot CB antennae. I took that out of the car because it was too long to keep in there & kept that in my garage. I used that antennae on the truck i bought after getting rid ( i hate that term) of the car after a divorce. I kept that anntenae and after 37 years I still have that thing & when i discovered those scenes last week i went into my garage where i have it still. I have moved several times since then but always held onto that thing for some reason completley forgetting where i got it originally. Now that i know, i am overwhelmed at the fact that i STILL have a piece of that movies history & had it all this time.

oh right good bit of detective work on the dvd :yesnod: i have yet to get a copy on dvd :slap:

I think Ghoste has the DVD, he has seen the taillights switch on the 68, and maybe he can get screen grabs and post pictures. the scene where the charger is on the hill above the cop car is really a 68, in the scene just before the cop car goes into the river, thats why the 68 grille is seen. I hope someone can get some screen grabs of the walnut grove when the charger drives or limps into them to fix the wheel, and also of the scene of the charger as it makes that hard right turn where the 2 farm workers look at it as it screaches past them, that is the scene that shows my 6 foot CB antennae on the front fender where the radio anntenae is suppossed to be, that very antennae is in my garage right now. :2thumbs:

Photoscape allows you to resize, control file size, and screen capture (and a lot more I haven't looked at) in a program simple enough for me to use. :)

If you have a zoom feature, it shows clearer. I can zoom in and move up down, left & right. you can see my antennae in the picture of the charger. try and get a picture as the charger limps into the walnut grove to fix the wheel. Right when the tailight panel comes into view, you can see the side 68 marker light in the stripe, the odd looking 69 light panel & the missing reverse lights under the rear bumper.

scat pack fever

Hello! I have the 35mm trailer that was used at the theaters back in the day.

model maker

Scat pack fever, compare that tailight panel with the one on the car just as it pulls off the road after it wrecked and notice the black panel just above the lights, on the pretend 69 the black area is only an inch or 2 high.

Maybe this has been already talked about, but when the charger pulls off the pavement onto the dirt road, he hits the brake lights and you can see 4 round tail lights.

They filmed the movie in sequence and did not have a second unit. they had to film it that way to keep up with the damage on the cars according to the director who explains a lot of this on the movies commentary track. they had to make the 68 look like a 69 and did a pretty good job back then, they had no idea there would be DVDs that could be paused and zoomed in in the future or that the film would be digitally remastered. I am so glad that I held onto the chargers special antennae shown in that 1 scene in the walnut grove. If it wasn't for the slow motion feature i have, i may have missed it completly. I think I may have the charger nameplate from the roof sail somewhere or the charger emblem still. I remember it being in my  old toolbox and seeing it about 7 years ago and it has been 31 years since the charger & I parted company.

That's such a huge overlooked factor in the detail & continuity goofs in older TV/movies.  30 or 40 years ago there was no assumption that the average viewer would ever be able to freeze & replay the footage under any circumstances.

If the audience wasn't going to pick out a problem during the 2nd or 3rd theater screening then it didn't matter.  The only other time the footage might be shown was on television.  The little TV sets back then would have revealed even less detail than the theater showings did.

thats was intresting ! talk over with the director !!  need to watch it a few times to take it all in !! i guessed that was filmed at reel speed , thats what makes it soo real ! none of tis modern day camera trickery ,
mentioned 6 chargers i think  :scratchchin:
heres a couple of screen shots i took last night !!( will resize more later)    both of the 68  , one looks like it had a roll bar( see bottom picture) or could be the edge of the side glass ! but looks too thick  :scratchchin: & the other ! dont think it has  :scratchchin:

Ghoste

I'd have to watch it again and concentrate on the scenes with a 68 but there is definitely a roll bar in the 68 (or one of them if that is the case).  It's more easily seen in some parts than others but in at least one of the publicity stills you can really see it.

Khyron

my understanding was there were only 3 Chargers used.

1 69
1 69 R/T
1 68

BTW:  there was plenty of undercranked (fast-forward) chase footage in DMCL if you know how to spot it.  I think DMCL looks better than the average chase because it was fast driving + moderately undercranked footage.  Lots of modern movies give us slow driving + severely undercranked footage.

Real speed chase footage is so rare in Hollywood that I think it visually stands out more than the faked stuff.  In honest-to-god real speed the cars look kind of sluggish & heavy compared to what we're used to seeing.
