The State The Colonel....UPDATED!! "IT IS FINISHED"

THE COLONEL

As some of you know by now, The Colonel has gone in for a fresh rebuild of the 318.  I did find out that it is not the original engine as I was once told, but it really dones't matter too much to me, because that would have been the only thing that would have been original.  I can say now that nothing is original on the car now, but again is not that big a deal to me.  Anyway, here is the state of the condition.

12/14/09 The Colonel's last voyage...tired and old!

Out with the old!  Fast Eddy started on the engine & tranny at 8am, and was out and apart by 2pm. 12/16/09

The engine was in pretty bad shape, as was the tranny.  The tranny was not far from buring up.  The fluid was about as thick as oil, and it really smelled burned......BAD!!

The bearings were all getting eaten up, and had dirt all through them.......we just threw those in the garbage.  There were many parts in this engine that did not make sense.  It had racing parts, pickup truck parts, stuff that was cast in 67, 68, 69...and so on.  Basically the car was put together with anything that would work to get it on the road.  The rad had also been repaired several times, and leaked many more times.  If you could see it, mostly likely something was worng with it.   The engine and tranny were on their last days, and it was a good time to pick to finally do a complete overhual.

After a couple days of bad weather, it came back to my house so I could get most of the front end off. 12/19/09

After the new year, it will be sent off for paint in the bay, and under the hood which will be black, but the hood hinges will be yellow.  The front end will get rebuilt, and I will also be switching to a front disc brake conversion.  The grille will also get restored back to factory specs.  The rear end will get a new seal, and a new exhaut will also be put on.  It will be a process, but well worth it to have a car virtually new from the doors forward!!!  I will post more info and pics after the next faze.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

THE COLONEL

Well, here is some updated info on The Colonel, and what is going on.  Well, I took the grille to Harrisburg PA a week and a half ago to get restored.  I was going to do it myself, but found I have absolutly no time.  Anyway, I dropped it off to a friend of Tombo's. It will be getting restored back to factory specs, which will be nice!!  I can't wait until it's done!

Here are some pics of the grille before I took it to Harrisburg

I also got The Colonel in for paint last Monday...finally. I have been waiting for the roads to clear with all that crap on them. Anyway, the bay and under the hood will get a good steam clean, and some nice new black paint. After it gets paint, it is back to my friends garage, and rebuild the front end, swap to front disc brakes, change the seal in the rear, and put the engine back in. Then off for a new exhaust, and put the front end back on, like the grille, and bumper and things....but finally in for paint!!!!!

The engins is back from the shop, and here are some things that were done to it.  Some of this makes no sense to me, but I am learning! :blush2:  There were oly a few parts from the engine that were used again, but for arguments sake, it will be a brand new engine.  The tranny is also rebuilt too.  This will be a dream to drive when it's done!

THE COLONEL

Well, the engine and tranny are finished, and ready to be put back in the The Colonel.  It is still in for paint, and we found that the hood had pin holes in it, so that is getting taken care of as well, in the propper way.  So, both sides of the hood are getting painted right now, so it is a little longer wait, but it will be worth it, when all done.  The headers are done too as you can see in the picture.  Once The Colonel is out of paint, it will be sent back to my friends to put it all back in!  The front end will be rebuilt still, along with the disc brakes added to it, the new seal in the rear, and also the new exhaust will probably be the last thing.  Anyway, here are some pics of the engine!

Thanks guys!

the guy doing the engine is Ed Eckenrode.  He has worked for Chrysler for years, and just retired a couple months ago.....good move there.....!  He has raced, and built race engines for years, and with his more then 40+ years building Mopar engines...well, he has probably built more engines then most of the members here combined.  His work is amazing, and he is one of those people that you have to know him for him to do work on your car.  I have been pretty blessed to have him do it.  He also did my dad's 64 Sport Fury a couple years ago too.

As for the Rad, I can't remember where he said he took it at the moment.  The paint work is being done at Percise Auto just outside New Brighton.  He has worked with them for years too! ;)
"THE COLONEL....DIFFERENT RANK...SAME ATTITUDE"

THE COLONEL

Well, here is the latest update!

I did change it up a little from what was told above.  The engine bay, and under the hood...well, I decided to keep it yellow like the car is now.  I am in no rush to change it right now into a General lee, so that was a huge decision of why to keep it yellow.

The Colonel is back at my friends garage, and will be back on the road within the next month if the front grille gets done in time.  I also bought reproduction front parking & turn signal lenses.  I tried to polish the old ones up, and make them more presentable, but they are just too aged, and will look out of place with the rest of the front end.  So I went new, and they are AWESOME!!!! Exact in every way to the originals!!

Anyway, here are some pics of the engine bay now.  Compared to before...WHAT A MAKEOVER!!!!

Well, it is almost finished.  i stoped by today, and it is running, and does it ever sound good!!!!!!!!!  Just a few odds and ends to complete, and it will be good to go.  I am still waiting on the grille, but hope to get that back soon, and put it all back together and get it complete again.  Torsion bars and things need done, but it went for a 5 mile ride today, and runs great...even without the grille! LOL  I will probably bring it bacvk home in the next few days, and clean it up, then when I get the grille back, it is ready to go!!!  Here are the pics from today.

Beautiful car :2thumbs: :2thumbs:  It sure is nice to see someone making progress and it gives me the kick to keep going.

THE COLONEL

Well, here is the latest update.  The grille should be done shortly, and it all should be back together in the next couple weeks.  My guess is a few days before Carlisle.  I also (for the first time) took those clay bars to the car.....wow!!!!    Those things are unreal.  I didn't think it would work half as well as I thought!!!

But upon closer inspection of the car, I did find something that....well, I'm not very happy about.........not from the builder, but the paint shop the car was in.  Take a look for yourself....

At first I thought it was just a lot of dirt and needed cleaned.  You can stand in front of the wheel, and not even see it.  I had to get right up close to see that it was paint.  They told me to take rubbing compound and the paint  will come off.  Let me tell ya, the money I spent for them to media blast and paint it........I will not be doing it.....THEY WILL BE!!!  I have to pic up the frint Valance from them this week, and I will schedule a time in July for them to fix it....ASAP!

Also I have no idea where this happened at.

This was a Repop cap and ring a year and a half ago.  I know Ed (the builder)  would not have done that.  Don't tell me he might have done it, because his pride in cars, and how careful he is......it would have never happened.  Trust me!  But I can't put the blame on the paint shop, unlike the wheel, which is a no brainer where that happened.  All in all, other then those few thigs, I am happy wiyh how everything has turned out, and I can't wait to get it on the road for good!

This next two pictures are my favorite.  Can anyone guess why? 8) I LOVE IT!!!!!

The car looks great!!!

On the cap, I'm just going to throw a scenario out there and let you run with it.

First question is, has the car been cut and buffed.......if it has then that is where that could have happened.

I've been buffing my car for the last week myself and it is very easy to either slip or intentionally buff a piece because you are in the area just to shine it up a little.  As I'm looking at your cap I am noticing what appears to be swirl marks in different places and on the black portion telling me that a buffer has gone over this with compound.  The easiest color to see a swirl is black.  That being said, if the buffer is on say a speed of 4-5 and not way back down between 1-2 when in tight areas, you stand a very good chance of burning or taking off paint simply because the area that you are not paying attention to is getting hit by the buffer while you are concentrating on that one spot.  Buffers are unforgiving at high polish speeds and will burn paint in a second and if it just catches a piece of whatever(emblem, sticker, plated chrome)that is just lifted a little bit it will rip it apart.
I'm not saying that is what happened, I'm just saying that is a very good possibility.

The car looks fantastic and they did an outstanding job.

What did you use the clay for?

As for the overspray on the wheels, get some varsol or some 3m gum and adhesive remover, it should come off pretty easily because it's new. Then wash it with soap and water quickly afterward.  I'd say thinner but I don' know what the finish is like on the wheel, under that yellow.

Man, that engine bay looks like poster material!

Thanks for the words guys.  The only thing I have ever used on the cap is the Mcguires quick detailer.  Thanks for the info on the remover.  I might try that so it won't be on there for Carlisle.  The clay takes all the dirt out of the paint.  I used the quick detailer, and the clay bar they give you, but I can't believe the dirt it took out.  I waxed the car before it went in for all the work, but it still had all kinds of crap on the paint, and wax would just not take it off.  I used a cleaner wax on it today, and then I willput a polish on it.  Right now it is as smootgh as a babys butt!! ;)

Here you go tilar.  No they are not new but seldom used or talked about IMO.

I've never really given one a chance. tried it for overspray once, didn't like it for whatever reason. Left a smeared residue or something, I can't remember.  I need to try it again I guess.  I just use machine glaze with a new pad and buff myself.

I tried to buff, but the residue just would not come off, so I used the clay bars, and could not believe it.  Just go to the auto store....heck even Wal Mart's auto section.  They have clay kits, and will tell you exactly how it works.  I'm still amazed.

Before you wax, you should put a coat of polish on it.  The 5 basic steps to detailing a car is wash, clay bar, polish, wax, then fine detailing such as door jams, dust in vents, etc.  The reason why you polish then wax is because the polish actually "nourishes" and keeps the paint pliable and prevents it from drying out and cracking.  The wax is pretty much a sealer that keeps anything from getting into your paint.

Your gas cap looks just like mine.  I got mine from Year One a few years ago. Just last week I was blowing some dust off the car with the air hose, and I blew some of the black paint off the cap.  :RantExplode: Appearantly, it doesn't stick to the chrome very well. Should be an easy touch up though.

NO!!   Clay bar first to get paint smooth before buffing....if not then you will be buffing grit right into your paint defeating the purpose
Chris' '69 Charger R/T

THE COLONEL

Exactly.  use the clay bar first.  You can get the kit at Wal Mart for $15 or $16.

Well, after using the clay bar, the cleaner wax, and then my Diamond Luster polish, the piant has never looked this good before.  I should have used the clay years ago.  here are just a few pics of it tonight.  Carlisle is coming fast!! 8)

The plans now are to just enjoy it.  It will not be changing colors anytime soon.....like years.  I like it the way it is now.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?
