What is the worst job you've had?

What is the WORST job you've EVER had? The job Im currently at has been so bad that I can't help but laugh at the amount of crap I've put up with!

I was hired on by a family friend to caretake and manage his bar for the winter. My duties were listed as simply; Keep the fires going, vaccuum the bar once a week, handle all the cash, due all the paperwork, handle the bartenders, handle the people in the inn, etc.

Well I must say the managing duties have been easy since I've done them for this bar off and on for years but the caretaking duties are another matter.

I was told that I would start on December 1st and move into the house behind the bar.

1. I phoned the only phone company to get a phoneline put into the house (this call was made October 15th) and was told by Telus that it would be December 3rd before the line could be put in. No one showed up on December 3rd and Telus is now saying it will be December 31st before I can get a phone.

2. The house Im staying in had the water lines (copper) freeze and then burst due to the furnace not running because the owner of the bar decided he wanted to cheap out and not buy oil for the furnace. These burst UNDER the house! I was told to just use water and toilets in the bar and was never given a date on when I could expect these to be fixed.

3. Im only getting 5 hours sleep a night on average due to the amount of work it's taking to keep the fires going. This isn't that bad but it's really annoying going to bed at midnight and waking up at 5am in -30 degree weather just to keep the fires burning because no one cleaned the ashes out of the fireplaces (so the fireplaces only hold 1/3 the amount of wood they normally do). I am not allowed to clean them out because Im not allowed to let the fires burn out.

4. Everybody seems to be complaining no matter what I do. There are about 6 people sleeping in the inn upstairs due to the local mine. Normally we don't have any boarders during the winter because it's too hard to keep the rooms heated with only wood heat. The owner told the boarders that they are also supposed to keep the fireplace stoked full of wood as well but they are lazy and expect me to do it every two hours.

5. The water lines in the bar froze and broke. This happened not due to the cold persae since the water lines were working fine only two hours before they broke. Once again these broke under the floor and can't be fixed until at least a week. All the water was shut off in the bar and the bar has been closed until further notice.

6. The toilet (in the house Im living in) froze and broke which dumped an entire tank of water onto the bathroom floor (a new toilet is needed and I cant use the toilets in the bar since the water is shut off over there due to the broken lines). Once again due to their not being any oil for the furnace. Was told this wasn't going to be fixed until spring.

7. Having -30 to -40 degree (Celcius) weather along with 4 feet of snow certainly doesn't help.

8. Realizing that there isn't enough wood to last the entire winter.

9. Realizing that Im making only HALF of what the drug addict who did the job the year before made before being fired.

Even while most of this still happened I kinda enjoyed the job but now it's getting to the point where this has officially become the worst job Ive ever had so far! I'm sure there someone who can top this crap! :D

My worst job was in a hot tub factory. The work itself was interesting and I advanced pretty quickly, but the environment was brutal - and it didn't have to be.

The acrylic shells are reinforced with fibreglass and, while they surround the work area with welding shields, one end and the top of that area are open and they shoot the ground off flashing all over the shop. At one point I saw a stream of fibre glass flying into the centre of the shop.

The solvent used to glue the ABS or PVC (I don't remember which) was nasty, nasty stuff and even in a huge shop, you were quickly overcome with the fumes. I saw one mask in the whole shop that might have helped and it was hanging on the corner of a shelf covered in about a quarter inch thickness of dust.

I had a headache after the first hour of the first day.

The guys I worked with were a bunch of characters. Two of them left for lunch and didn't come back. One of those guys was training me. So, I was all of a sudden left with no direction and we hadn't completely plumbed on tub yet. So, I didn't know all of the connections. We had been working on 4 tubs in the morning, do one step on all 4 then moving to the next step.

In the afternoon, the boss taught me how to run the forming machine - because it was computer controlled and I was "a computer guy." That was my advancement.  That was pretty cool and if that was going to be my job from then on, I'd have stuck with it. I made 6 tubs and didn't screw any up. He said that was a first for anyone learning that process.

I didn't go back after the first day. I couldn't sleep that night. I didn't eat much at all. I don't think I got rid of the headache for a week.

Hmmm....

Well, the worst was probably the two summers I worked as a lobsterman in Long Island Sound. Nothing like loading up lobster traps with rotting fish in 100 degree August heat. I still remember the first time I spun the lid off the bait barrels and got that blast of stink right in my face.. BAMMM! I booted right over the side.  :puke:

Yea, that job sucked.

A close second would be working as clam digger... not much stink but a lot of work for not a lot of money.

First off, drache, holy crap, stay warm brother, or move south!

Worst job for me would be working for Menards in the distrbution warehouse on the carousel.  Boxes come down a ramp, land on the carousel and when the box gets to the pallet of the store its going to then you take it off the carousel and stack it on the pallet.  The boxes never came at an even pace, it was either none for 10~20 minutes or a flood that would jam up and create havoc.  I lasted 3 months..

The hardest i ever worked was bailing hay and stacking 15 loads a day in a barn when its 98ยบ OUTSIDE  :o .

Here's my worst job. I worked at a farm down the road cleaning out barn stalls, getting chicken eggs, feeding the animals etc. They told me they wanted me to work whenever I could, I was free a lot but they only told me to come work like 2 or 3 times. I got paid for those days. I worked a few more and then let them know that due to summer coming to a close, I couldn't work for them anymore (because of school). They said okay and would pay me for the last two days I worked. The money never came. I tried emailing them and they said the money was mailed to me (which I don't get...I can walk there in like 2 minutes). The money again, never came. After that they never replied to my emails.

Then the lady who screwed me over was running for mayor and her whole campaign was about "how honest she was" and "how much she cared about the locals". :coocoo:

I worked as a dishwasher in a VERY busy bar & restaurant when I first moved to Ontario. No training other than "this is the sink, there's the dishwasher and the scrub pads, the bleach is right here and the kitchen closes at 1PM". The first night I think I worked till 4 or 5 in the morning (at minimum wage), listening to the lazy-assed manager whining about getting home late. He never lifted a hand to help or to maybe give a little direction on how to do stuff faster. I was as green as the meat on the plates back then. :)
Walked 3 miles to work and 3 miles home, usually cold and wet, thru one of the coldest winters Sarnia ever had. Lasted 7 months till spring time came and the bodyshops started looking for help. I left in a hurry once I got a bodyshop job.
I learned a ton working there - towards the end, I usually was finished and out the door by 1:15, unless I had to mop out the bathrooms after some cowboy woofed his cookies after a night of drinking - learned how to put up with every type of abuse possible, how to multi-task and how to excel at time-management.
To this day, the smell of dish soap just about makes me puke. :)

Scoopin' hog Shi!t. Next to that, working in a slaughter house, actually killing the hogs that produced the Sh!t. The Swift plant in Marshalltown would slaughter 16,000 hogs in two 8 hour shifts. It was like one every 3-4 seconds. On the other hand, shooting the rats in the barn with a Co2 powered pellet gun was pretty damn fun!!

When I turned 38 my parents said I had to start working for the family business & couldn't lay around at home any longer until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. It was tough for the first 6 months trying to get up at 10 in the morning to get to the Ferrari testing facility every Wednesday to see what the top end was on whatever car they had that week, but I managed. After the first year I said I needed a lot more than the $350,000 annual base salary & 3 months vacation time, but they thought that I was the one that was being unreasonable. We settled on $425,000 & 4 months vacation, but the expense account stayed the same.  ::)

My worst job was harvesting hops in the summer between school years, and to make things worse my job title was "hooker".

The hops are grown in hanging vines and then cut down and laid flat in a wagon. At the processing plant the hookers stand in the wagon in the hot sun and hook the stems of the heavy vines onto hooks on a conveyor chain. They are harvested at the end of August when the temperature lingers around 100ยฐ. Twelve hours a day six days a week. The resin in the hops pollen makes you itch so you have to wear long-sleeve shirts with the neck and sleeves taped shut to keep the pollen out.

Below is a pic from the company I worked for.

actually, I was the manager of the office that dispatches every single direct tv install on Long Island. I was in charge of 30 in house techs and about 30 subcontractor techs.  Corporate conference calls, 4 supervisors working under me....  If it was a sales clerk job, I'd probably still be there!! :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

If you live on Long Island and had direct TV installed in your home between October of 07 and feb of 08, then I was ultimately responsible for it.  Some day when the antichrist ascends from hell and takes over the world, he will be sporting a hat handsomely emblazened with the direct tv logo!!
