Hello Folks,

As some of you may know I'm doing a 73 charger small block to big block conversion. Heres where I'm at:

I know from previous discussions the Small block k frame and big block k frames are different as far as the mounts. Options are:

get a conversion from Shumaker (About $200 when all is said and done)

Or

Get this big block k frame from my buddy for like $75

Heres the deal. The K frame is out of a 73 Road Runner (B body) and the car had a 400 in it. Will this k frame work in my 73 charger?

PS it comes with sway and torsion bars. And my car already has the disk brakes

yes, and definitelly I would go with K frame mount ALLWAYS instead get adaptors...

BTW if is in your hands, get the passenger inner fender too. SB and BB cars are diff on that inner fender

and get the rubber matt what covers the big cut out.

about disc brakes, don't worrry, you won't find never a drum brake setup since 73, because become standart equipment

T bars are theorically the same between BB and SB cars except on police and some specially equipped cars... the real change is just on sway bars being bigger on BBs

if you have the chance, take measuremenst and pics about the differences on K members, to be noted, since all we know they are different but never ever has been compaired side by side with measurements

as far we knwo diff is existant but is very minimal. Minimal enough to know some ppl has been able to mount a BB on a SB car. I know down here in Venezuela has been able to do it without change. I think you get somedrivetrain aligment and tranny linkage issue. Thats some stuff ppl down here don't care.

Hi,

Thank you. I can tell you just from looking the mounts are further back on the k frame,, about where they need to be according to my measurements. Il have side by side pics today.

How hard is it to get out? I see 4 main bolts,, t bars but what about the upper a frame? Any tips would be appreciated as this thing is "down in the woods" ;)

Nothing against shumaker but I agree, stock is better when it comes to hardware.

need to remove T bars, and UCA plates from K member "tower" where they are mounted ( 4 5/8" bolts each plate ) because that plate makes the UCA fits above rail frames and voila... all the assembly will come out, including sway bar

yeah, same reason!!! adaptors are a GREAT solution, but if you have a Kmember handly no matter if a little bit expensive than adaptors itself, I vote for K member WITHOUT DOUBTS.

beside that you can make a service on K member before mount on car... check for rust around isolators... thats a tipical area what get rust damage. Check for welding seams etc...

I put 440 in my 73 with Schumakers. Well made. But if I had a k frame I would have gone that route instead.

Bob, i have to agree with Natcho....having access to the correct big block k-frame is a much better option than messing with those conversion mounts. One thing to consider when reinstalling the new BB kframe is a set of solid spacers as opposed to the stock type spacer.

solid spacer are a great option to get a stiffer ride, but myself I preffer to keep comfort being Caracas streets are a mess ( and we PRODUCE ASPHALT!!!  :brickwall: ) so I kept  rubber pieces.

you can go with a middle way option, poly K frame mounts! they are available now.

I looked everywhere for k frame mounts a while back and never could find any.
Who has them now?

What difference do you notice with aluminum or poly stub frame isolators?

Moparbob

Arg,

Just spent about 5 hours out in the woods in the rain getting that K frame out of that 73 Road runner,, good thing is its out,, bad thing is its still out in the woods because I was to tired to drag it out ;)

Sure hope it fits in my 73 charger ;)

Firm feel sells the solid mounts, they also will do some cleanup/reinforcement work on your k-frame for a price  :2thumbs:

The K frame is a no brainer bolt in swap. You can build the K frame all the way back up to include the steering box, before you bolts it in. I prefer the poly mount bushings. I tried the metal ones, but everytime I bolted on slicks and went drag racing the back two bolts loosened up. With the poly even if I let the front wheels slam back on the ground they stay tight.

I have not driven the car much since the solid mounts have been installed. The little bit I did drive it, seemed like a 3/4 ton truck!  Steering got stiff, probably have other issues that I haven't taken the time to look at yet. It did seem to stiffen the ride also.
I'm a bit concerned that the bolts will come loose after racing!  :o I don't understand that one. Ma Mo par had the solid mounts as an option on the police cruisers of that era. Kyle

Natcho or anyone,

Do you have a pic of the inner fender passengers side? I may have to cut mine as the car is already trimmed out. I didn't see a way to remove the one off the donor car without cutting it.

Actually, the Hooker Tuned Headers I found ( a buddy had for $100  :2thumbs: ) will fit with only a minor cut. Then I can leave the stock inspection port intact and avoid the large cut with the rubber..  Thanks!
