I have spoken to alot of people I know that have had a charger or knew someone that owned a charger at on point and all tell tails of the glovebox popping open while driving down the road.  My glovebox does the same on 69.  I wanted to get opions on how to keep it from opening.  It has the spring hinge on top and the latch just wont keep it down.  Any help would be appriciated.

You can adjust it to a degree but any of the ones I've had, especially the four speed cars, it seems like sooner or later that becomes an issue.  Even on my 67 with it's downward opening door I've taken to opening the door and leaving it that way when I have the car at the dragstrip because it's a huge distraction if it goes open while racing.

More than likely it is the button latch tab itself loosing tension.  The original round back style are very hard to find in good shape....the later model (70 & up I believe) square back style are easier to find & visually look the same on the outside.

I replaced both my console lock & glovebox lock with the newer style......don't tell anyone ;)

Round back...

Ah, but does it hold better?

I have the same problem. If I lock it with the key it stays closed. So if your´s is lockable try it.

I replace my glove box latch with a new one. It has never popped up when driving since.

I know this is an old topic but I am experiencing the POPPING open syndrome now...BOIIING!   Everyone seems to say the new locks work but is it the triangular spring loaded latch in the lock that has worn out for u guys? Mine seems to be the problem  :scratchchin:

Try to feel how much play is in the triangular piece.  It may be worn but without all that much friction it should not be.  The spring inside is probably tired.  You can try to lift the latch with some washer to make the lock grab on to it again but a worn spring will make the door pop every time.  While you're at it, check the dash frame to make sure it's not bent below the latch.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Like yours mine is a 68 also. It has the infamous "wire" loop catch latch. I know its probably my cylinder that's worn but I made my own wire loop latch but made it a bit taller so that the triangle spring latch would grab better. Obviously I saved my original wire latch. The problem is that I cannot road test it just yet.

Ghoste

How much taller did you have to go?

68 RT

On my 68 after taking lock out saw that the latch part did not always drop all the way back down. Cleaned it with carb cleaner, then wd 40 it, worked it a bunch of times. Now it works fine and stays closed.  :2thumbs:

Literally the thickness of the wire taller. So about 1/16" :shruggy:

Ever since i put stickies on the car, i have this problem..... lol.... love my stick car

Hard Charger

I am finishing my dash now. it is on the workbench. when closing the glovebox door you can see that the latch is not popping down engaging the wire loop. the strike gets caught up in side the lock mechanism. lubed the hell out of it for weeks, still gets hung up.
a new lock took care of the problem.

terrible one

Are any of you guys that are getting new console and glove locks interested in selling your old ones? Feel free to PM me!
