flip top gas cap and trim ring problem

Ok, I know this is for our 70 chally vert but I figured that some people on here have some challys as well as chargers like us.  My dad just got a Mopar restoration (repro) flip top gas cap and trim ring for our 70 chally vert.  The problem is that with the cap flush against the quarter panel, there is play in the trim ring and the trim ring is not tight against the panel or the cap.  Is there supposed to be some kind of gasket between the two?  Pictures of originals or ones on your cars would be helpful.

Not sure about the Chally, but the Charger has a gasket.

I know the charger has a gasket between the trim ring and the body.  What we would need on the chally is a gasket between the flip top cap and the trim ring to take up the space.

I'm not sure if there was a gasket or not. I put the same flip top cap on my Chally. I haven't seen a gasket listed anywhere so I put a thin bead of clear silicone in the groove on the back of the ring and let it set up. Then I installed it so it didn't rub the paint.

it should fit firmly against the sheetmetal, there shouldn't be any movement to start with so you wont need any gasket, unless you really want one.

Ok, dad talked to the body shop guy yesterday and they figured out that there were some tabs that could be bent upwards to take up the slack.  The trim ring fits fine now.
