Classic Auto Air sells new compressors that's smaller that the old ones:

I know it says 68-72, but I can't see much of a difference between a 72 and 73, drop them an e-mail.

Bouchillon makes brackets to mount the Sanden compressor, the compressors are available from many sources and prices vary, so shop around. (The SD-508 is popular)

When installing a modern compressor on the original Mopar system you'll need a clutch cycling switch like the one Bouchillon offers.

The modern compressors are lighter weight and less of a power draw than the originals.   They still hit you for about 15 pounds of torque but the horsepower draw is less than 5.

And the R-134a systems in the early years after the changeover were made with the pressure too high.  That's apparently part of the reason that R-134a got a bad rep for being not as cold as the old stuff.

So it makes sense to just get a modern A/C system for anything other than a factory-stock resto.

on stock form, dryer is located on pass inner fender on 72 and in front of condenser since 73, that makes lines also runs diff.
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

Anybody know what cars these Sanden SD-508 came on? We have some good auto wreckers here I bet I could find one.

The SD-508 is used on a multitude of cars, way too many to list here. The main differences from one year/make to another is the pulley arrangement (single, dual, serpentine) and the fittings on the rear plate. (flare, o-ring, special)

Hi John,,

How about listing a few of the more common ones? Fittings are not an issue, double pulley is whats needed but may I assume the clutch is interchangeable?

Perfect time to get an AC unit/ items from Bouchillonperformance they had Christmas discount last year saved like 150 bucks for there setup with some extras.  :Twocents:

Its all about money John, Plus its winter ;) I can buy the brackets, but it would REALLY help if I could fine a used compressor in a salvage yard.

I set up my non-AC 74 Charger with a factory AC setup and I had to change everything from the water pump housing forward just to mount the compressor. I mean everything! Go with the Classic Auto Air setup or another quality aftermarket setup and you will likely be a lot better off in the time, money and misery department.

Actually ours had air and I found a good sanden 508 like the one classic air has for $50. I re fabbed the brackets and its just like stock. I haven't changed any pumps or anything. The radiator shop is moving the top hose for $20 then we will use the stock top hose and be done with it.
